Panasonic RP-HT21 Lightweight Headphones with XBS Port Review

Panasonic RP-HT21 Lightweight Headphones with XBS Port
Average Reviews:

If you want value for your money, if you lose your headphones too often, if you wear out the cord, or plug on your headphones, these are the ones to get. I have a couple of MP3 players I use at work daily and with them I wear my headphones constantly. I either lose or wear them out whether they are more expensive or cheaper. I was absolutely startled at the bass that came our of these phones. It is deep, rich and accurate. Overall sound is better than a pair I once had that cost me about 10 times as much. Knowing that I would either wear them out or lose them I bought 4 pairs this time. I will definitely buy more when the need arises. An excellent deal, I highly recommend these phones.

Naxa NX-916 Super Bass Professional Digital Stereo Headphones with Volume Control Review

Naxa NX-916 Super Bass Professional Digital Stereo Headphones with Volume Control
Average Reviews:

I purchased the Naxa N-916 Digital Stereo Headphones expecting to get a fairly cheap set, but I was pleasantly surprised at their quality. They are extremely lightweight, which is especially impressive given their large size. I've worn them for over three hours consecutively and not experienced any discomfort. The sound is clear, but a little quieter than on my in-ear headphones. This makes it necessary to turn up the volume on some of my devices if I'm using the Naxas. On the whole, they're a good buy on a good pair of headphones.

Cyber AcousticsStereo Headset/Microphone, Ambidextrous design AC-201 Review

Cyber AcousticsStereo Headset/Microphone, Ambidextrous design AC-201
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased 200 of the AC-201 for our teaching staff and have had no complaints. The build quality is acceptable and the headset has some nice features for the price range.
UPDATE: 12-10-2009
After purchasing over 200 of these and distributing them around the state we have completed an internal review and have found a pretty unsettling result.
Of the 100 respondents to our survey (50% response rate) 14% report broken headsets (design and build quality), and 12% report poor performance. This equals a 24% failure rate over 2 years given heavy usage.
18% of the respondents would not recommend the product to others.
82% however felt that it was a good product, and 33% of the users rated it 9+ on a 10 point scale.
Given these additional results I have downgraded my review on the device from 4 stars to 3. I will keep the initial video review on the site as most of the factual information in the video remains unchanged. I would not purchase the current product for anything less than $10 shipped now.
Our organization is moving instead to the Caliphone 4100 which comes in at a $30 price point and is USB.

I was pleasantly surprised by these headphones. I think they were cheaper when I purchased them about 6 months ago... but they were a good buy for the money. Sound quality is good and mic works fine. My only complaint is that the ear pieces do not fit particularly comfortably on my ears so after a while (> 1hr) they are less than enjoyable to wear. But for the price I paid and the amount I use them, they were a great buy.

JVC HANC100 Noise Cancelling Headphones Review

JVC HANC100 Noise Cancelling Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are a few things about these earphones that need mention right up front, because they are so very well done.
1. Most noise cancelling headphones have a bulky battery pack in line on the headphone wire. These DO NOT, which means the wire is small and free of things to catch on airplane handrests and such. This is great.
2. Many noise cancelling headphones have a constantly connected cord, or allow the cord to be removed if you only want noise cancelling. With this, the cord rewinds into the left earpiece. This is again, extremely well thought out. If you just want noice cancelling, rewind the cord up. It's easy and since it's attached, you can't forget and leave the cord on the plane or at home. This is great.
3. It runs on a single AAA battery, which resides in the right earpiece, again nothing external to snag on anything.
4. They fold up nicely for travel.
5. Noise reduction works very well. I even use them at my office to block out the white noise and fans of my building.
6. Audio quality is fairly good, nice rich tones but a little lacking on bass. I enjoyed my videos and music with them very much. An audiophile might be dissappointed, but if you're using noise reduction in the first place, you probably are in a noisy environment where you can't appreciate perfect audio anyway. All in all, the sound is very good however.
All that is very good.
What's not so good. The headphones look like over the ear designs, and for the most part are. The earcups are actually very small and barely fit over your ear. I'm OK with that, and the padding is very soft. On the inside however, the cup where your ear sits is not very deep due to the electronics and such in them (battery on one side, retractable cord on the other). The top of my ear touches this inside panel and while not instantly uncomfortable, by the time I landed, both ears were a little sore from this. I flew from Chicago to Tokyo and by half way... both ears were sore. I continued to wear them because they worked so well and the noise reduction and audio with my computer was so good, but this is the only drawback I saw.

Skullcandy (Product Out Of Date, Newer Version Available) S6DABZ-BG Double Agent Headphones, (Black/Green) Review

Skullcandy (Product Out Of Date, Newer Version Available) S6DABZ-BG Double Agent Headphones, (Black/Green)
Average Reviews:

Originally I was looking for some sort of wireless headphone to work with a non-bluetooth MP3 player, and wasn't able to find anything without an adapter that was generally larger than the player itself. I had been checking these out as a potential solution, but could not find any reviews that weren't straight from the companies description of the product, to help me decide. My BF solved my indecision and just bought them for me.
Personally, I love them, but I can see a lot of things other people may not like. Here's just the facts.1.Wireless and really light.
2.The sound is not Connoisseur quality. If you are used to cheap earbuds like me, then they are fine, if you favor a robust pair of Sennheisers, I wouldn't risk it. Low and bassy, but the highs are muffled.
3.Headset is tight, which although good for me, may not be good for people with larger heads or who are more sensitive to excessive pressure on their ears. The good side is they don't fall off during anything, jogging, gym, working on projects, random frolicking in your house, etc.
4.I dig the oddball color combinations, but other people may find them too flashy. There is an all-black one however.
5.Interface is totally no frills. play/pause, volume, and next. You can put your music on it in folders, but not actually jump from folder to folder. (or at least the instructions don't tell say you can.)Again, plus for me, waste less time preparing my music and spend more time actually hitting the gym, but could be a minus for many.
5. No shuffle feature. I never use shuffle. (going from classical to house to black metal in 10 minutes makes me neurotic..)
6. Hour long charge gets you about 8 hours of play. charge via USB.(joy!)
7. You can very clearly hear button clicks while wearing them. Not so good if you want to go 50 songs forward.
8. Comes with a cord to plug into an mp3 player if needed.
9. Interface and charge are totally USB plug and play.
10.Comes with 1 GIG SD.
11. Buttons are easy to reach and press, but the symbols are not very raised. May take a few trys to get the right button before you get used to it.
Basically, if you just need a no-frills wireless solution for an active lifestyle, these fit the bill. What I imagine to be the big issues for most people are the sound quality and the tightness. Although I am very pleased with them, I would advise most people to try them on and listen to them first if you can.

Sony MDR-J10 h.ear Headphones with Non-Slip Design (Green) Review

Sony MDR-J10 h.ear Headphones with Non-Slip Design (Green)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first time I had seen these headphones was in Sam Goody. Recently I had been using the ear buds. I hated them. They constantly fell out and were never comfortable. I was off looking for the ideal headphones which meant comfortable, fantastic sound, great bass, would stay on no matter what, and would leak almost nothing (so my parents couldn't hear me). I purchased these and took about 15 minutes to realize that the "L" meant "Left" and I was putting them on backwards the whole time. I knew they were on correct instantly. They were comforatable and fit snug. I turned on the music and let it rip. My mom (who was next to me) had to tap me on the shoulder to ask when I was going to try them out with music. She never knew they were even on! These were turning out to be the greatest headphones of all time. The XBS was great through these small things, I could set them in my hand and turn the volume up and I would FEEL the beat. Well enough story here's the pros and cons...
PROS- Great sound, never slip, comfortable, barely leaks noise, easy to put on and off, durable and long-lasting (survived being rolled up in some wrestling matts), beats all other over-the-head headphones, easy to jog with.
CONS- After a looong (about 3-4 hours long) period of listening, your ears hurt, and even with the tangle-slip thing they still tangle easily.
That's really it. Great buy, go for it.

At home I had been using the larger type headphones (Sony) that fit over the ear completely. They are heavy but I had no intention of changing. I was looking through different ones for work and had saved these in my shopping cart, but had decided on a different pair. I accidently purchased these and it wasn't worth sending them back for a refund so I kept them and now I use these instead of my Sonys. The sound is fantastic. They are much lighter and the volume control make these one of the best mistakes I've made. There are better headphones out there, but for this price, these deserve a 5 star rating.

Sennheiser RS 180 Digital Wireless Headphone System with Automatic Level Control and Adustable Balance Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow, I have been waiting literally years for a quality set of wireless headphones. I listened to many including the previous generation of Sennheiser's. All of them had some low level of hiss and less than audiophile sound quality. The wait is over. These cans utilize Kleer technology and an open design. I always preferred open headphones for the more natural bass response and to my 50 year old ears these sound great. The headphones are comfortable though I would like a bit more padding spanning the entire headband. The buttons on the headphones that control power, volume and balance (handy if you have asymmetrical hearing deficits) are too small and flat but I can now control the volume without removing the headphones. The range is listed as being up to 100 meters and practically speaking, as I can walk on either floor of my house and even outside in my yard without any noticeable effect. Every 30-40 minutes I may get a brief 1 second or so loss of sound but it is infrequent enough to not bother me. Expensive and surely not equivalent sound to an equally or more expensive pair of cans but they are very close in terms of sound and the wireless performance makes them the real deal, totally worth it.

Sony MDR-V150 Monitor Series Headphones with Reversible Earcups Review

Sony MDR-V150 Monitor Series Headphones with Reversible Earcups
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It seems from a lot of the reviews on here, that people don't quite understand the specs behind headphones which are crucial to its sound. A lot of people are comparing these headphones to iPod earbuds and saying that it sounds like something is missing. Here's why:
The technical specs for iPod earbuds:
Bandwidth response-20Hz to 20,000Hz
Impedance-32ohms
The technical specs for MDR-V150s:
Bandwidth response-18Hz to 22000Hz
Impedance-24ohms
For those of you who don't understand the numbers, it means that the MDR-V150s have a broader range of sound, but the iPod earbuds pack a bigger sound. This is precisely why you think something is missing.
If you listen to iPod earbuds over a long time, your ears become accustomed to really loud, albeit a small range, sound. This is also why iPod earbuds are known for causing serious harm to your ears over prolonged periods of use. For it to sound right, you have to use the full amount of power, which the earbuds provide. Your close-range hearing becomes damaged over time and you can't hear subtle sounds or details, but you can still detect low volume. The earbuds won't sound deafening because you can still hear outside noise.
The MDR-V150s have a larger range of sound and lower impedance. That means there is a much richer sound. You don't need to jack up the volume to get a good listen (but you do need your hearing intact). You also may not be used to the larger range of sound so the range of sound you're used to will sound drowned out at close range. Many of the comments complaining about this transition from earbuds are noting that staples of their music listening sound strangely undetailed on the MDR-V150s. High levels of bass have a way of "drowning" out treble sounds if you're not used to listening to music with ample bass at close range.
Another major difference is that since these are "on-ear" headphones instead of "in-ear" buds, you have much less outside noise interfering with listening. It's like the difference between listening to a car stereo with the windows up or the windows down. You have to listen to things louder if there's more outside noise and you can't notice as many details either. There is a reason cellphone handsets for the car use earbuds instead of headphones, and that's so you can still hear the road. Why would you want to use earbuds that are intentionally designed so you can still hear your surroundings but compensate for it by deafening you?
I work a lot with sound whether it's production, music, or art and I use these as portable stereo phones because of their quality and sound range. I use them with my iPod with the long cord tucked into my case's belt clip. They are incredibly affordable for their quality. Most comparable headphones cost at least $30. I have been using these headphones since freshman year of college when I was first exposed to them in my school's sound lab.
My opinion aside, the manufacturer specs speak for themselves and it's hard to imagine that iPod earbud fans really believe that these provide less sound when physically they have a much broader range of sound and do not permanently damage your ears.
As for the tightness, it's good. It'll keep the phones pressed against your ears. The padding coupled with the tightness is what keeps as much outside noise sealed out. The more noise cancellation you can get, the better the sound.
And for the hair complaint: you could always tie up your hair or give up on headphones with plastic size adjusters. The plastic size adjusters were just designed to snag hair, so it seems.

I am a computer teacher and may of the applications that we use in my classroom involve audio. After the first few weeks of school, I decided that 38 computers all making noise was simply not working for me or for my students. I knew that headphones were the answer. I pay for these items out of my own pocket and needed something inexpensive, but reliable. These headphones fit the bill. It is much quieter in my classroom now, and the students can actually hear their own computer, not all 38 of them!

Sennheiser RS 130 Wireless Surround Sound Headphones Review

Sennheiser RS 130 Wireless Surround Sound Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Audio choices are obviously very personal, so I hesitate to recommend anything too strongly here. Tastes and tolerances differ so greatly, and wireless audio products really seem to push those differences. Maybe some of my needs and wants will match yours, maybe not, but please consider my thoughts here in light of the many personal qualifiers that I add. Those qualifiers may or may not relate well to your own situation. By the way, my apologies in advance for such a long review, but I really appreciate details when researching audio gear. I thought you might, too.
BACKGROUND
I'm about as picky as they come when sound is the issue. I have a small home recording studio, with 30 years of experience as a semi-pro musician (jazz, rock, classical, country). That said, I approach every musical equipment purchase with thorough research and comparison. Since I already have good wired phones (Senn 280s, Audio Technica M50s, and others) in my studio, I wanted some wireless cans mostly for moving around the house and yard while listening to music from my home stereo system, kind of a self-indulgent luxury. I've read enough to know that any wireless models using a radio signal (the best type of signal if you'll be in a different room than the transmitter) will produce some hiss and pop on occasion. I accepted this fact before buying. Still, I decided I would not accept something else: poor sound quality, in a musical sense. Two of the sub-$200 phones with rather consistently high reviews (in magazines and online) were the Senn 130 and 140 models. So I ordered both models to compare them in the privacy of my home. (I paid about $115 for the RS-130 and $135 for the RS-140; be patient because the prices here fluctuate often.)
TEST EQUIPMENT
A 100-watt/channel JVC receiver and JVC CD player--both typical (low-end) home stereo components. To suit my personal tastes for EQ, I boosted some at 16 kHz (to add air to the highs) and at 60 Hz (to add depth to the lows).
FOR MUSIC NOT TV
I've used these cans mostly for listening to music, which usually masks any low-grade background noise. TV use, with its emphasis on dialogue, would be demanding in other ways, so I'd defer to other reviewers for feedback concerning that application.
POINT OF REFERENCE
The entry-level price for a decent set of wired (corded) cans is roughly $100. The price of these wireless Senns, especially the 130s, isn't much more.
LIKES
Musically, both models sound as good as I'd hoped except for their shy response at the extremes (see Test Equipment above). Still, when I've been wearing them while working outside, I sometimes have to stop what I'm doing, raise the volume, and just listen for a while. They sound that good. I wouldn't use them in my studio, but considering the low price and mobility, I'm very satisfied. As I'd read, the open-back 130s sound (and look) a bit like Senn's popular 580 audiophile (wired) model--open, smooth, warm, and most of all, pretty well balanced. The closed-back 140s have a similar sound, maybe a bit boxier, overall, as is typical of closed cans. I think that some folks (such as heavy rock n' rollers, rappers, computer gamers, the hearing impaired, and even office workers) might prefer the 140s for their enhanced isolation, but I found the 130s, which offer the spacious open-back sound that made Senn famous, to provide the flatest, truest sound, overall. After a lot of back and forth listening to verify my impressions, I kept the 130s. The 140s would be a perfectly acceptable alternative, though. The differences are minor.
Both models are cushy comfortable, and the features and controls are top-notch. I've never liked surround-sound simulations and the like, so I can't comment on that feature (130s). But I find everything very simple to use, and all works fine. Like easy? Hang these Senns up and they turn off and charge automatically. Press a button and they tune their reception and then memorize it, also automatically. The reception's very good, too, after I improved it significantly by moving the transmitter unit to a slightly higher shelf and trying the different freq-channel options. Remember this if you buy. Also remember to boost the source volume plenty so that the phones receive a strong signal. (By the way, I've read that you may experience greater interference noise if you live in a congested area, which I don't.)
DISLIKES
No review would be complete without some criticism and warning, so here's mine. Above all, choosing musical equipment involves personal tastes, which vary greatly, so try to listen before buying. Trust your own ears. If you do buy either Senn wireless model, you should expect some hiss and pop and hum at times, usually just when you move around, but almost certainly if you head outside or into another room far from the base unit. (The stated spec of "up to 150 meters" seems laughable.) You may even notice the sound strengthen and weaken on occasion. In this price range, at least, I think you'll need to accept such reception problems or else stay with wired cans. Period. Wireless freedom is never perfect, is it? Beyond that, I wish these cans were as snug-fitting as my Senn 280s, which grip my head tightly. These wireless phones are like light pillows, very comfortable since they sit 'around' the ears (not 'on' the ears), but I'd bet that some folks with smaller heads could find them to be a bit loose when walking around. And finally, another obvious point--bad or good, depending on your situation--is that the 130s (which I prefer in terms of smoother, truer sound) are open-air cans, meaning that you'll hear your family if in the same room. That's good for staying in contact but bad if you want to get away from outside noise. The closed 140s are certainly better for blocking out a barking dog or not disturbing a nearby loved one.
COMMENT ABOUT INTERFERENCE PROBLEMS
If you're not already totally sick of me, you can check out my reaction to the interference problems that some users report here. (Click on 'Comments' below.)
OVERALL
All in all, both models of these phones admirably meet my picky expectations although being realistic about the limits of low-cost wireless sound was a necessary starting point. Nah, these wireless phones aren't perfect, and they're certainly no match for good wired cans, but I think they offer impressive overall performance for $100 plus change. An enthusiastic '4 and a 1/2 stars' and a lot of brag from me. Well done, Senn. Happy listening, all.
P.S. TO ANYONE WITH HEARING LOSS
If you have reduced hearing, particularly in one ear, you should probably choose the RS-140 model. The addition of the closed back (for isolation), L-R balance control, and compression switch (to equalize the overall volume) could be helpful.
NEED MORE RESEARCH?
Head over to "Consumer Search" online for a master summary of pro and consumer reviews of wireless headphones, including these. (The Senns do very well.)
UPDATE
A quick 2009 update, more than three years of almost daily use later: no surprises, no regrets, and the original batteries are still kicking. I stand by my review fully. I did find one time that the headphones didn't work, but a quick jiggle of the audio input in the base unit brought them back to life. True, as some folks have noted, there is indeed annoying interference at times but usually just when moving around in another room or outdoors. That's only a minor limitation for me but clearly a deal-breaker for some people (although some of them, I suspect, haven't boosted the source volume enough). But the surprisingly good music quality and thoughtful design at this low price point is the real story here for me and my primarily musical needs. If you eventually decide to give the Senns a try, just be sure that you can easily return them if they don't fit your own needs and limits. I typically return about half of the audio equipment I buy, even after thorough research, and have learned the value of a simple return policy. Good luck to you.
DISCLAIMER (SUMMER 2010)
I notice that the price has nearly doubled since I wrote my review, and that would change things for me. If I had this much to spend on wireless cans, I'd likely opt for Senn's new RS-180 model instead.

Audio-Technica ATH-M30 Professional Headphones Review

Audio-Technica ATH-M30 Professional Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After purchasing an iPod mini, I thought I could use much better headphones to test the quality of the aiff files provided by iTunes. I must emphasize that I am not an expert as the other reviewers. When choosing this pair, I read reviews and looked for high quality under 50 bucks. These headphones put my big stereo speakers to shame. I can hear the background singers and instruments I haven't heard before. They sound completely awesome! (no, really, they do). There is a little bit of leak, not much. and they are extremely comfortable and lightweight on the head. I'll be testing them out extensively this weekend while traveling on airplanes. Update on airplane use: they are not noise canceling headphones, but they did block the noise of a few verbally obnoxious passengers, and while volume was cranked up, no one knew how much the tunes were cranked up. My friends that have tried them out call them *amazing*, like a symphony hall.
Around the house, they block out flushing toilets, dishwashers, and those annoying sounds from the kids' room. The cord is super long, so I can keep my iPod in it's dock on the kitchen counter and walk around and cook dinner and clean. And the connector has a strain relief so I know that the cord won't break off from running around.
I also needed headphones to go with my laptop while watching DVDs and listening to music and other computer things. Unlike my other cd headphones, these are in stereo and pick up amazing sounds. Also, they block out the computer sounds of the dvd spinning.
I suppose they weren't made for household use, but they sound so good, that they will keep me happy for a long time, baby.

Skullcandy Hesh Paul Frank Headphones S6HECZ-050 (Black Julius) Review

I love these headphones. They are very snug and good for simple music listening. There is no volume adjustment, so you would have to adjust the volume from your mp3 player or computer speakers instead. These headphones definitely take away all the extra sound around you.

Philips SHL9500 Lightweight Premium Headband Headphones Review

Philips SHL9500 Lightweight Premium Headband Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Philips SHL9500/37 headphones to replace my current set of Sony MDR-A34L Vertical In-the-Ear Headphones. I was interested in over-ear rather than in-ear speakers. I've been using the Philips for two days now and I would say I am satisfied.
The sound quality is very similar to the Sony headphones, though slightly better. I listen to my headphones at a relatively low volume (in an office environment), which may play a part in the quality. When I turn up the volume the sound is very rich and full. I am not an expert on headphones, but these do not compare to the headphones in the $150 price range that I have tried - but I'm not sure you can expect them to for less than $20.
The folding design is convenient and makes for safer storage/transport when tossed in a bag. They are comfortable enough for longer periods of time. Overall, I plan to use these as my "everyday" headphones, as they do the job when listening to my MP3 player while at work. For those times that I want a little more quality I'll be looking into a higher quality set of over-ear headphones.
For the price, they fit my need perfectly.
