Cyber Acoustics AC-840 Internet Communication USB Mono Headset Review

Cyber Acoustics AC-840 Internet Communication USB Mono Headset

I just bought 2 more sets (we now have 2 PS3's in the house) This is my 2nd set for me. The mute, volume control, and price make this the best bang for the buck in gaming headsets. This is my 2nd set for me because the 1st set I stepped on and cracked and the swing arm also got loose over time. The only downside to these headsets is that after 1.8 years the arm got real loose and would not stay in place. The headset was still useable because it "flexed" up close enought to my mouth to pick me up but I decided to get another one since I was ordering another for our 2nd PS3 in the house anyway. MUTE FUNCTION and VOLUME CONTROL is a MUST on any headset you decide to buy.

I was pleasantly surprised by these headphones. I think they were cheaper when I purchased them about 6 months ago... but they were a good buy for the money. Sound quality is good and mic works fine. My only complaint is that the ear pieces do not fit particularly comfortably on my ears so after a while (> 1hr) they are less than enjoyable to wear. But for the price I paid and the amount I use them, they were a great buy.

Logitech Wireless Headset H760 With Behind-the-head Design (981-000265) Review

Logitech Wireless Headset H760 With Behind-the-head Design (981-000265)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The idea of a lightweight and cordless headset appealed to me--cords tend to snag on the mountain pile of papers that is my desk. When I finished sawing through the Fort Knox style clam shell packaging I was taken aback by the diminutive size of the dongle--which is roughly the same size as a standard USB thumb drive--and headset which features a thin behind-the-head band. In fact, the dongle is so small that losing it is a real possibility; having a way to attach it to the headset when not in use would have been nice.
Installation was a dream. On my Windows XP, Vista, and 7 computers all I needed to do was plug in the dongle. That's it. I'm still awed by Logitech's ability to make plug-n-play more than a marketing ploy. But...
The first use was like a bucket of cold water to the face. Lightweight does not equal comfortable. There was no way my ears could survive more than an hour or two of use. The mesh material covering the speakers is a skin irritant, causing my ears to itch. Also, the portion of the headset which rests above the ears to hold it in place presses against the back of my ears and causes pain after prolonged use. Plus, after an hour, my ears felt as though they were overheating.
Another drawback to this headset is the lack of a speaker mute button. It is instead replaced by a play/pause button which only functions with a few specific applications. It was something I didn't think I'd miss...until I landed on a website with gawdawful music playing in the background and no way to turn it off. Instinctively I reached to the large center button (the location on another Logitech headset) and was dismayed when the noise didn't abate.
I also noticed that a button to manually select the audio settings (i.e. movie, music, chat) was absent. I figured the change would happen automatically but I noticed no discernible change in audio quality when I switched between the three (i.e. Skype to iTunes to WinDVD, etc.). That said, the sound quality isn't up to an audiophile's standards, but it's not abysmal either.
The range, through concrete walls, was about 30 feet, which for me is more than enough. It allowed me to multitask across my office, and even in my kitchen, while still being party to a conversation on internet chat. Had the headset been more comfortable I'd see no reason to take it off at all while working on the computer. Alas, that isn't the case. And unfortunately simply switching off the headset does not revert sound back to the computer's speakers, the dongle itself must be removed.
The headset lasted about 7 hours of actual use (with a few days downtime between uses) on a full charge and it only takes a few hours to recharge. It can even charge with a USB wall charger--I've used it with the one that came with my iPhone without problems. But the charging and power lights are anything but intuitive. After reading the user's manual, I'm still confused by the blinking/coloring while in use/charging.
While this has some great features--size, ease of use, range--it has a few major drawbacks--uncomfortable for prolonged use, not switching to computer's speakers when headset is powered off, a small dongle with no way to secure it to headset. So my final verdict? It's adequate, but does not go above or beyond the call of duty and may be counterproductive for some.

Plantronics .Audio 995 Wireless Stereo Headset Review

Plantronics .Audio 995 Wireless Stereo Headset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lots of reviews out there, but mine is a bit more objective due to the testing I have done.
Probably, like you, I was in the market for a headset to use with speech recognition, Skype, music playback from iTunes, etc. But I wanted to cut the cord on my Logitech USB headset. So a few months ago I went out and purchased the Logitech ClearChat Wireless headset. Between this latter headset and the Plantronics 995, there really is not much else on the market as far as non-bluetooth wireless headsets go. These headsets use a USB 2.4 GHz transceiver. This is much better than bluetooth, which constantly needs pairing and has sub-par performance when used with speech recognition, VOIP, etc. due to low bandwidth.
Testing and using the Logitech ClearChat Wireless headset, I was pretty impressed. It worked with Dragon Naturally Speaking/MacSpeech Dictate, as well as with Skype.
However, what I did not like about the Logitech ClearChat headset was that the ear muffs were too small (many complain about it) and there was constant static whilst speaking to someone on Skype (Skype to phone calls). Additionally, the more you move around with the ClearChat, the more static there is, and the range was acceptable but not great. To make my testing objective, I was switching, on the Skype call, between the USB headset and the wireless ClearChat one. The static was only present with the ClearChat headset and not with the USB headset.
So, having read all the great reviews about the 995 Plantronics, I went down to the store, exchanged my ClearChat for a pair. I then phoned from Skype to a telephone (same person) and tested the reception again. This time, there was hardly any static at all (user feedback): their comment was that it was "much improved" from the previous wireless headset. I also got better range with the Plantronics as well.
In addition, the speech recognition seems to work a bit better too, and is actually working amazingly. Seems even better than my USB headset.
Furthermore, I tested some iTunes playback and no question the Plantronics has fuller, deeper, richer sound than the Logitech ClearChat headset.
The only thing I like better about the ClearChat headset is that you can quickly switch the headset off when you don't want it to be connected to the receiver.
With the Plantronics, you can quickly switch it on and off too, with auto-pairing (nice), but there is only one button, not a switch, which needs to be held down for 2 seconds to turn the unit off or on. The only issue is, unless the unit is off your head, you won't be able to see the solid blue light turn to red then off. So if you want to shut it off and leave it on your head, it is not possible to get confirmation from the headset that it is off. However, you will see the blue light flash on the receiver, from solid blue, and that is confirmation you have turned off your headset. But it also indicates the headset is out of range, so the only way to really know for sure that your headset is turned off is to remove them from your head and look to see if the light is off on the side.
Thus, the ClearChat's simple on/off switch is superior in this regard, where you can turn the unit off without the need to remove it from your head for confirmation. At any rate, this is sort of minor because most times you can be confident that a flashing blue light on the receiver indicates you have successfully turned off the headset, so you won't be needing to remove it.
And I like to power down the unit frequently to save on battery life...
As for battery life, I think the Plantronics is better than the ClearChat as well, and both demand roughly the same charging times. Of note, when you first get the unit, charging it may be a bit quirky. You should calibrate the battery (the ClearChat headset took 2 days before it was fully charged, for instance).
Other than that, do yourself a favor and get the Plantronics wireless headset. It is truly liberating to have the cords cut, and it works extremely well with speech recognition.
4.5 out of 5 stars, because of the on/off procedure and paltry instructions that do not explain how to turn the unit on/off. In addition, nothing is perfect. But a 4.5 out of 5 star rating for me is a huge compliment to anyone. I am very critical of everything, and demand a lot from my computing products. Plantronics: well done.
Remember, hold down the power button on the headset for 2 seconds ONLY to turn it on or off.
----------------------------
January 6, 2009 UPDATE:
I just wanted to update everyone. Just recently, the headset's power button broke (it wouldn't press any more: sort of stuck). I almost had a suspicion that it would happen because the power button feels a tad cheap and must be pressed and held down for a few seconds to power down the headset. Since I like to power down my headset often to save on battery life, the switch didn't hold up. I just received my new unit from Plantronics and it's charging. Customer service was pretty helpful. They express shipped it to me, which was nice, after sending in my old unit.
Now, do I stand by my review? Yes, yes, and, yes. Aside from a flimsy power button, the unit has worked as I have described. Speech, Skype, and music are the ticket items for this headset. All these latter work very well. Also, I just had a friend call me on Skype recently using the Plantronics 995 headset. It was on my recommendation that he bought the headset. He's got a standard cable internet connection with 1 mbps upload speeds. This is the first call I have received from someone who was using the Plantronics 995 headset.
The thing is, I did not know he was using it when he phoned me. When I picked up, and he started talking, I interrupted him and asked him what kind of microphone he was using. He said the Plantronics 995. I was blown away by the quality of the audio. It sounded so good like it was in stereo sound. I had to smile because I was the one who recommended this to him, on the pretense of a boatload of research and testing. As the conversation took course, I just was smitten by how well it sounded. That right there was confirmation enough to me that this headset is 'for real'. It sort of concluded my testing.
Since I didn't know he was using the Plantronics 995 Headset, it puts that extra layer of validity into my testing. This was no 'placebo' effect. I noticed the quality of the sound without knowing he was using the 995 headset. If you read my entire review, and this update, I think you would agree that my testing is rigorous enough to pass the standards set in the context of the scientific method. Far too many reviews float around the internet with giant holes in their testing methods. I am not tooting my own horn, I am just stating the facts. I put this through some objective testing to prove to you, the reader and consumer, that this headset works as I have described.
I have a feeling this headset is going to be a sort of 'cult classic'. That is, one of those landmark products in a category that struggles to define itself. Although the power button is a bit flimsy, Plantronics really got it right with this. Call quality is incredible on Skype, music has thick, rich sound, and speech recognition just works. This is really the freelancer's/home user's/business user's competitive advantage.
So, like I said, go get liberated, and pick up the Plantronics 995. You won't look back. Rest assured the hard work, the research has already been done for you. I'll stand by this review for all my waking days.
As I spent a lot of time researching, writing, and updating this review, maybe you can take a minute and comment! Let me know what you think. Thank you!
Sincerely,
//Amazonman//

Logitech USB Headset H360 (Black) Review

Logitech USB Headset H360 (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this headset mainly because I work from home twice a week and I wasn't happy with my previous headset. I was previously using the Logitech Clear Chat Wireless Headset. That headset just had numerous problems with it so I decided it was time that I just played it safe and went with a wired headset.
Despite my previous experience with Logitech, I purchased the H360 anyways. After doing some research I found out that it actually takes advantage of Skype's new codec. At the time I purchased it, there were only 3 headsets that did this, so that was a major selling point. I have made many calls with this and people always tell me that I sound really clear. Someone even said I sounded too clear. haha.
Since I use this for work, it is also important that I have a headset with great noise canceling. The H360 does not disappoint. I have tested this out and I can have my tv awfully loud in the background without the caller even noticing.
Another feature that another user mentioned was the fact that it works with your PS3. It doesn't mention anything about this on Logitech's website or on the packaging, but it works great. My PS3 even recognizes it as a "Logitech H360".
Now for my cons. I think this may be a personal thing, but sometimes it tends to hurt my ears if I don't have it on just right. This is definitely something that probably varies from person to person though. Another minor issue is the shape. Although I love the behind the head fit, it makes it awkward to set down on a desk. This is only an issue for me because I am constantly setting it down and picking it up.
Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. My only regret is that I wish I had waited a week or two. Logitech released two more headsets that take advantage of the new Skype codec and their design looks like it may be a little more comfortable.

Plantronics MX500i 3-in-1 Headset Review

Plantronics MX500i 3-in-1 Headset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Plantronics Mx500i 3 in 1 headset.
I purchased this headset to be used on my computer with Skype and have had it about three days now, making a few calls with it. I'm not an expert in how headsets should `sound', all I know is that I can hear people well and they can hear me. Everyone I've talked to hasn't realized that I'm calling from a computer or using a headset.
The headset itself is pretty light and sits on my ear well. The back of my ear did get a little sore after an hour the first time using it but I adjusted the position and the soreness went away. Even though the piece hangs off the ear I don't feel any real weight and it's incredibly comfortable to the point where I forget I'm wearing it. It also fits very snugly against my ear and there's no wobbling of any kind when I move my head. I actually leave in on when I'm working and not making calls because it's more bothersome to take it on and off then leave it in.
From the picture you can see that the back of the piece is grey which is a soft, flexible rubber. This is the part that sits behind the ear and holds the piece in place. The earbud swivels left or right allowing you to put it in either ear and has a bit of soft rubber on it although it seems to be more for design then function. The swivel is downward with a 180 degrees range from the horizontal position. The tube coming out of the piece which carries your voice to the receiver is set in a ball that can pivot depending on where you want the microphone to sit. It can also be turned to accommodate whichever ear you want to use. The head of the tube or `the microphone' is covered in a hard, porous, foam. When placed in the ear the tube comes down to about the corner of my mouth.
The cord that comes out of the headset has various attachments on it to adjust volume and the like. The cord can be broken up into two pieces. Part One extends from the headset and runs about four feet to the 2.5mm phone plug. This is the plug that can be put into a normal, cordless household telephone. This plug also plugs into Part Two of the cord which seems to be pretty long (five feet or longer?) and transforms into the USB portion that plugs into your computer.
On Part One of the cord is a clip to attach to your shirt to create stability. The clip can slide up and down on the cord between the headset and the volume control switch. Below the clip, about sixteen inches from the headset, is a volume control switch which is about an inch and three quarters long. The switch has a volume control wheel in the side, a mute button and a tiny, recessed, microphone boost switch in which you'd need a paperclip or pen tip to switch.
On Part Two of the cord is the 2.5mm phone plug receiver. A few feet away from that is a black plastic `something' about three and a half inches long and an inch wide. I'm guessing this is what digitizes you voice. From there, the cord extends about a foot until it turns into the USB plug.
Also to note, Part One of the cord is very similar to the thin headphone style cords with the double wire coating. Beginning on Part Two, the cord becomes thicker into a single coated cord and the last foot, after the plastic `something' it becomes even thicker before turning into the USB plug.
So far I like this headset a lot. I've read complaints as to its size and, when comparing it to a Bluetooth headset, they'd be right but I'm coming from an over the head style headset which means it's smaller then what I'm used to. It's incredibly light and comfortable. There's was some soreness at the back of the ear initially but maybe it was because I wasn't use to it. I like that I can unplug the 2.3mm plug and walk around the house while leaving the piece in my ear. I also like that I can put it in either ear in case one gets tired.
I haven't found a quick way to put it in my ear yet, wrestling with the soft rubber and the cartilage in my ear but once it's in it's fine and I usually just leave it in.
Something to note: I purchased my headset from Circuit City, a major electronic retail store. The first one I purchased had a manufacturing defect, one of the wires was exposed through the rubber. Luckily they had another one I could exchange it for. This might be something you want to keep in mind in case you're purchasing online.
The product is perfect for what I need. The only improvement I'd request is 1. A case, because I like to go to the café and work and I'd be worried about throwing it in my bag without some type of protective covering, and 2. a shorter Part Two cord. Again, going to the café to work and make calls, pulling out a 6+ foot cord is a little unwieldy. I'd even opt for purchasing a shorter version of Part Two.
So, all in all, it's great for use at home but too much cord for using anywhere else. I really like the product. Works well for me, light, and not as `huge' an earpiece as other reviewers led me to believe.
