Shure SRH840 Professional Monitoring Earphones (Black) Review

Shure SRH840 Professional Monitoring Earphones (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The SRH840 is a new monitoring headphone from Shure, the company that is prevalent in professional circles for mics, in-ear monitors and other tools used by the sound engineers.
First a disclaimer. I'm NOT a fan of their in-ear monitors, finding them to have a sound that is too treble recessed. Only their top models like the SE530 are any good to my ears, and in my opinion, there are better for the price.
When they announced their line of full sized headphones, I thought they would be overpriced, but surprise....these are $200 which is a lot cheaper than a lot of other high end headphones.
These are clearly meant to be used as tools. They have that studio-use look, no cutting edge style and no exotic materials to give that high end bling. A detachable cable that plugs into and locks into place. It folds easily and neatly into a compact bundle. The cable is a coiled affair, which is kind of annoying for general use as you always feel tethered, but it makes sense for pro use since you usually plug them into your mixing/sound interface at arms reach on your console or desk. All the materials look durable, and you even get an extra set of earpads, and a little carrying bag with drawstring. Of course, a screw in 1/4 adapter is supplied. Top marks for all the things you get, you don't need to buy anything else.
The headband is very flexible design, and you can bend it any way and it springs back. The padding is a soft knitted material, and the headband slider has soft detents. On my big head, the clamping force is slightly tight but I suspect most people will find it quite comfortable. The earpads just go around the ears and I still have a bit of room to spare. The noise isolation is decent, my computer's noise is no longer noticeable. These are good companions for the office.
Sound:
These are definitely monitoring headphones. They have a middle-of-the-road sound presentation in their sound signature. Bass extension is quite deep, and there is still good bass presence below 40Hz. Treble is not overly-sparkly as you would find in other headphones like Denons or Grados but it has just enough treble sparkle that you don't feel like there are cottonballs in your ears (unlike some other Shure In-Ear monitors that I disliked). I would say the treble is just a wee bit shy of neutral. I'd think if you have a treble control, adding a decibel or two would make it just right. Mids are good, there is a tad bit of upper midrange graininess, and is well balanced. Sibilance is well controlled. Detail is above average for their price. While they don't extract the most minute details like some AKGs and Grados, I think they are just being honest. While those other headphones let you hear specific characteristics of certain instruments very well down to the texture of each violin bow stroke, these Shures don't have that deliberate magnifying effect anywhere in its presentation, which is good because you don't really want to hear exaggerated view of any one thing for a studio monitor. These aren't the last word in bass tightness, but the bass is presented with warmth and musicality, you feel and can clearly follow rythymn. This headphone doesn't sound thin nor too thick.
Soundstage is a downfall of closed type headphones, and these are no exception, but they are about average if you compare them to other closed models like the Sennheiser HD280. Don't buy these if you want to experience the grand 3D scale of The Philharmonic. What I like about these headphones is that they basically don't try to niche themselves, they don't go out of their way to call attention to the sound in any way, which is what a good monitoring headphone should be. I find them superior to the inexpensive reference monitor Sony MDR-V6 in overall sweetness and fluidity to the sound, these are just much more preferable for general music listening.
I like these a lot, and I think they don't have any obvious flaws. They are like the goldilocks of headphones, a neutral impartial tool that just presents the sound with no frills. While there are other headphones that will surpass these for certain types of music, and even many others that get your feet tapping more, these Shures seem to take the stance "meh, go ahead with those other headphones, I'm just doing my job"
My previous recommendation the Denon D2000 still stands as the headphone I like for a lively fun listen that gets me involved in the music, but I am finding these Shure quite compelling in that they are honest sounding..they are a good reference for what the sound signature would be like hearing the music that the mastering engineer heard in the studio.
These will be my new go-to recommendation for closed, neutral headphones from now on.

Lady Gaga Heartbeats In-Ear Headphones (Bright Chrome) Review

Lady Gaga Heartbeats In-Ear Headphones (Bright Chrome)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Usually, I am not one for artist-endorsed products, but the GaGa Monster Heartbeats in-ear headphones looked so fab from pictures that I decided to check them out in real. For starters, the box looked really stylish and the headphones are placed in yet another black box which is magnetically latched. Once opened, you will see the bright chrome and white cables with the matching protective pouch. Once taken out, the headphones feel sturdy and the cables are truly tangle-free and every bit the trademark of Monster cables.
Now, beauty aside. The sound is amazing and it should be for it costs almost US$170 here than in the US. Once I picked the ear buds of the correct size, everything else is secondary. I connected the earphones to my iPhone and there was so much clarity and bass pumping from them at even 3/4 of the volume slider. I could hear almost all the background instrumentation and effects. More importantly, all surrounding ambient noise is cut off almost entirely.
Sweet.

Beats by Dr. Dre Beats Solo HD Black On-ear Headphones with ControlTalk Review

Beats by Dr. Dre Beats Solo HD Black On-ear Headphones with ControlTalk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to admit I was a bit skeptical purchasing these headphones as the previous generation Dr. Dre Beats solos got some poor reviews in terms of an overpowering bass and poor build quality. Considering this price point I assume a lot of consumers are looking for the same things I was in a pair of headphones: high fidelity sound, great build quality, and style. Upfront these new HD Solo headphones represent in all there categories.
High Fidelity:
I tested these headphones out in several genres since I listen to an eclectic mix. First thoughts was I found the sound a little too tight and not broad enough. There needs to be an initial burning in period to get the full sound quality, lets say 8 hours or so of heavy listening and these bad boys find their sweet spot.
The first cd in the mix was Kings of Leon Only by the Night I put on 'Sex on Fire.' You get some nice high notes and kick drum beats in this song as well as some killer electric guitar. What impressed me was how sweet the vocals were in terms of clarity and vibrato while still letting the instrumentals shine through. I like my music loud and clear, and these delivered...the kick drum literally vibrates your head with every beat while keeping the mids and highs spot on!
The next cd up was some Lil' Wayne I Am Not A Human Being. I put on the first track 'Gonorrhea.' Damn boys and girls this is where the Solo Beats HD shine, pow pow, like bass so far gone you wonder is there an earthquake in my head. Followed up by a great rendering of the electrical beats and smooth bellowing vocal licks and you know these headphones just busted out a five star review hands down.
I wanted to slow this tempo down with some acoustical guitar from my man Ray LaMontagne. So I will round out this fidelity review with his live performance of 'Empty' off his latest cd Gossip In The Grain. I figured if these headphones would fall short, no doubt it would be on a song like this. The breathy vocals and pedal steel guitar on this track gave the Solos HD some difficulty. I seriously doubt this would be noticeable to most listeners. I found the instrumentals to be a bit spacey on the low registers with the speakers focusing more shine on the highs. If I were to judge the solos entirely on this performance I would still give them 4 stars.
I also watched an episode of "Glee", yeah I said "Glee" Boss! It sounded excellent. Crisp dialogue and nice full body rendering of the song performances. Mercedes preformed a rendition of 'Rag Doll' from Tina Turners old release and it sounded phenomenal. Overall I found the sound quality to be excellent and all encompassing across the numerous genres of music and vocals.
The build quality and style of these headphones was equally impressive.
I know there were some previous issues with the head band snapping in the Solos, but they seem to have fixed that with a metal band that is hidden below the padded head rest. The band seem to has a lot of give and flexibility while still feeling firm. I was most impressed with the tightly fitted hinges where the ear pieces fold out and the thick metal used to extend the ear cups. When extended the ear cups do not fold but firmly remain in their locked position. The padding around the ear is the softest synthetic vinyl I have ever felt and could pass for calf skin leather. The headphones feel soft and supple around the ear. On the head they feel firm, almost too firm at first but do loosen up like a good pair of shoes over time while stile keeping their rigidity . I think this is a true sign of build quality. After breaking them in they feel extremely comfortable on the ears and I have a fairly large head.
The 'Control Talk' cord is in one word, perfection! It is long but not too long, red in color and has a thick rubber skin. The 3.5mm L-shape adapter on the end is idea for plugging into a music player or laptop as it bends inward and safely stays out of the way. I cant count the number of headphones I have had that fray or break off because of jutting out and being pulled, bent, or rubbed to death. I like how I can lay back in bed and type on my laptop with out my headphone jack pushing against my forearm on the side, a huge plus. The other end plugs into the head phones making this a detachable cord which is very nice as it can be replaced independently of the headphones. The 'Control' talk feature is awesome. You have a volume up and down function as well as a small steel(not plastic but steel) button in the center that you click once to pause or answer a call, twice to skip forward, three times to skip backward. This will only work on certain devices though. If you have a mac it will also control your volume and playback features in itunes which rocks! It worked great on my macbook pro and my ipod touch 3rd generation. Though to get the song to skip I had to click twice with some quickness, but it did work.
The finish is done in the same shiny black on these as the Studio by Dr. Dre beats. Simply put these look cool as all get out. The brushed aluminum trim work on the ear cups is a nice touch as well as the beats log on each side. I did not find fingerprints to be that much of an issue on the gloss finish at all. They do include a red microfiber cleaning cloth. In summation, yeah sure for cheaper you could get equal or even better quality sounding headphones. Check out Shure 440's or even some Koss PortaPros if your tight on cash and want good sound quality with less focus on style. However as far as Bass, Style, and Audio Quality goes, check these bad boys out! I highly recommend them! I got mine on the cheap for 169 at Buydig dot com with a 10 dollar coupon (BDRewards10) check it. Or Google them. All the music mentioned above can be purchased right here on Amazon.com.

Red Sox Beats Studio Headphones Review

Red Sox Beats Studio Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll start out by saying I collect mid-priced headphones(between $50 - $300). It may be an odd hobby, but it gives me a certain perspective that others may not have. I'm also an engineering major, and I found the general lack of objective, in-depth headphone reviews on Amazon to be disconcerting. So, here I am, taking a shot at reviewing some of the headphones I either own or have spent a lot of time listening to.
I've devised a simple six-song test and rating system, where 0 - 2 is abysmal, 2.1 - 4 is poor, 4.1 - 6 is mediocre, 6.1 - 8 is above average, and 8.1 - 10 is excellent.
The songs are very diverse; I was trying to represent a wide range of genres. They are "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac(encoded in 256 kbps Ogg Vorbis), "Every Planet We've Reached is Dead" by Gorillaz(256 kbps .ogg), "Concerto Grosso #26 in D major" by Handel(256 kbps .ogg), "I Know You Are, But What Am I?" by Mogwai(500 kbps .ogg), "Afro Blue" by Triplexity(192 kbps .ogg), and "The Patient" by Tool(500 kbps .ogg).
I listened to everything on an iAudio 7 with the equalizer set to flat and all the sound effects turned off.
Sound Quality(6.8/10)
The Chain(6/10) - bass is nice and deep, slightly exaggerated, but still pleasant to listen to. Distortion is present, but very minimal. Mid tones and highs are somewhat underrepresented and bland, but otherwise sound decent. Instrument separation is a bit muddy. The main negative here is the sound stage, which is tiny.
Every Planet(8/10) - lows and highs both sound very smooth and rich in this song. Mid tones, as before, are underrepresented and bland. Instrument separation is good, but the sound stage is very underwhelming.
Concerto(6/10) - the bass in this song is deep and vibrant. Lows are nicely responsive. Mids and highs don't have quite the balanced presence they should have. Instrument separation is fairly muddy. Once again, the sound stage is lacking.
I Know You Are(7/10) - bass, as expected, is nice and vivid. Distortion was too high near the beginning of the song, but gradually leveled off. Highs were nice and crisp, but mid tones were lacking. Instrument separation, as was the case with most other songs, is a bit muddy, and the sound stage, while not as bad in this song, is still mediocre.
Afro Blue(8/10) - the lows in this song were pleasantly punchy, and the highs were fairly crisp and smooth. Mid tones were muddy, however, as was the overall instrument separation(no surprises here). The sound stage is similar to what it was in "I Know You Are, But What Am I?"; it is more present than in most songs, but doesn't have the fullness I would expect of circumaural headphones at this price.
The Patient(6/10) - right off the bat, the bass guitar in this song sounds great. Treble is decent, but underrepresented, as are the mid tones. The primary complaint I had in this song was actually not the sound stage(which isn't emphasized anyway), but the instrument separation, which I felt was greatly lacking in precision.
Overall Sound(6.8/10) - the bass from these cans is overall clean and pleasant. Somewhat exaggerated, but not greatly so. Distortion, while present at times, is also in small amounts. These aren't the subs-attached-to-your-head that some might expect before having listened to them. Treble sounds above average, but slightly underrepresented. The mid tones even more so - to the extent that they come across as bland. Instrument separation is also a bit muddy(although not too terrible). Another reviewer commented that these headphones were designed to sound slightly muddy, but I find this hard to believe, since the advertisement on Amazon claims "precise audio clarity". But as I've mentioned time and again, the biggest drawback to these cans is the sound stage, which just wasn't there. Overall, though, I would give these headphones an above average score in terms of sound quality.Design(9/10)
These are a closed-air, cirumaural design, and a very attractive one at that. I like the styling very much. Lines on these phones are aggressive, but clean and elegant at the same time. They are also very comfortable. They're lightweight and have plenty of padding. My only complaint here is the headband, which I felt was too rigid, and didn't conform to my head as much as I'd have liked. I also like how mobile these are - they fold up, and come with a nice case to carry them around in. Great for traveling.
They are also built pretty well. I would rather see more aluminum at this price, but the plastic they're composed of is nice and solid. They seem durable, and I doubt they would fall apart anytime soon.
Noise Isolation(7/10)
Noise isolation in these Monsters is accomplished via the closed circumaural design, which features plenty of thick padding, and active destruction of outside sound waves entering the headphone. I am a fan of the former; the latter, not so much. In my experience, active noise cancellation interferes with sound quality, not only because of the waves that must be emitted to interfere with incoming ambient noise, but also because an external headphone amplifier can't really be used with noise-canceling headphones due to their built-in amplifier, which is typically not of premium quality. It's difficult to judge on a case-by-case basis, because the built-in amp can't be removed, but going by the sound produced by the Monster Beats, I don't think they're an exception to this rule.
All of that aside, the Monsters were definitely designed to be noise-canceling, so I won't dock points for that. What I will take off points for is relative effectiveness, which I didn't feel was where it should be, all things considered. They do block quite a lot of noise, but plenty of noise still bleeds through. I've heard noise-canceling headphones that are considerably more effective. Then again, I've also heard much worse, and these, in my opinion, are above average.
Bottom Line(6/10)
Monster Beats by Dr. Dre are a good, above-average sounding and noise-isolating pair of headphones that feature a comfortable, highly stylish, and mobile design. This doesn't come close to justifying their high price, however. Sound quality should be significantly higher in this price range. But as always, different people perceive sound quality in different ways, and I highly encourage you to listen for yourself to a wide range of headphones before spending money. Those interested in good, deep bass at or under the price of the Monsters should also listen to various Beyerdynamic headphones, and the ATH-D40fs model by Audio Technica.

These look awesome which is why when my first pair stopped working on the left side (within 2 weeks) I chalked it up to a faulty pair so I went back to Best Buy and grabbed another pair. Get to the gym, plug them in, and the volume control doesn't work at all and the center button works maybe 2 out of 5 times. I was so mad! A lot of headache and not one good experience with these! Might give the tours a try but a lot of reviews I've read recommend v-moda brand ones so i'm still debating. Save your money!

PowerBeats Sport Headphones From Monster? - In-Ear w/ Sport Hook - Black Review

PowerBeats Sport Headphones From Monster? - In-Ear w/ Sport Hook - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received these back in 10/26 so it's been almost 2 months. I watched many reviews on YouTube before making this purchase and I was lucky to be one of the first people to pick these up.
Packaging: 5 stars
Can't go wrong here, Monster does a great job on packaging (and I'm a sucker for good packaging). I love the box, and plastic zipper case.
Sound: 3.5 stars
It's good, not great. I expected more. I owned my fair share of head phones. From the Bang and Olufson A8, the V-Moda Vibe, Klipsch S4, and the Apple In-Ear headphones. I'd say it hits all levels at a decent range. There wasn't as much bass as I'd hoped (and I tried all 3 fittings). There is bass if you jam it up in your ear, but it will slip out with some running. Even at it's best, the bass still isn't that great. Does it sound as crisp as the Bang and Olufsen? No, does it have better bass than the V-Moda Vibe, No. Does it have a good mid range like the Klipsch S4? No. Does it suck? No. it's a fairly okay headphones that should be prices at about $100, not $150.
Application: 3 stars
It definitely stays on once its on. I've been running with these and they don't come off. They are fairly comfortable but it can strain your ears after about 2-3 hours. (everyone's ears are different)
I really, really wanted to like these headphones (this is my first pair of Dr. Dre anything). The cord is nice, it doesn't tangle that much and the extension cord is a plus. So here's the bad, I ride a motorcycle and I usually wear headphones and listen to music. Over the ear headphones just don't work with helmets (at least mine didn't) It was easy to put on the helmet but removing it was the problem. Another thing I noticed while working out at the gym, the buttons on the control talk are so easy to press. They are a little too sensitive. You can be jogging moderately and all of a sudden, your music stops. The distance from the left ear phone to the control talk is about 6 inches. So this means the control talk rests somewhere around your neck area. While doing heavy weight lifting, like squats or decline press, your neck caves in and presses the control talk button on accident. It would be nice if the control talk was a little lower (maybe 2 more inches). It would be nice if the head jack had an elbow application, I can already foresee that the wires will stretch and bend-- and it will be only a matter of time before it rips. So...Awesome that it stays on, but crappy that the control talk buttons get pressed so easily.
Build Quality: 1 star
It's been about 2 months and I use these about 4 times a week at the gym and just today, the control talk just broke. It completely split into 3 pieces while walking to the gym! You'd think after spending $150 you'd have a pretty good build quality, I guess not. Like I said, I REALLY wanted to like these things, and for the most part, I did. It's just til now that it broke.
Customer Service: 0 stars
I will follow up with this review once I contact customer service later on today. They better replace my headphones-- this is ridiculous.
Update** 12/14/10 11:20AM PST
I've attempted to contact customer service for the 5th time only to be hung up on or placed on hold again. Monster has the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. I've already filed a complaint with BBB. Hope that your headphones don't break or are defective so you don't have to deal with what I just did. Everytime I call, I am placed on hold for half an hour when someone picks up, doesn't say anything and either hangs up, or places me back on hold. What kind of business is this??! Who does that?!? I lowered my rating of the product from 3 stars to 1 stars because of this horrible customer service.
Either hire qualified CSR or terminate the existing ones who don't want to work!
Update*** 1/4/11
Finally received a replacement from Monster after formally submitting a complaint through BBB. Hopefully these headphones won't fall apart again.

iBeats Headphones with ControlTalk From Monster? - In-Ear Noise Isolation - Black Review

iBeats Headphones with ControlTalk From Monster? - In-Ear Noise Isolation - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I own several pairs of headphones, both in ear and over ear, and the iBeats are above and beyond anything I've used. The first step was finding the right fit (of the 7 tips included, I found 2 that fit perfectly, one regular mold, and the other the "Airlock" style). The standard tips are a snug fit, and allow the bass to hit fairly hard. I have a pair of Koss in ear headphones, and the Bass does hit harder, but the iBeats bass is much cleaner. The "Airlock" style tips fit snug as well, and I found that while in my ears, they were comfortable, but after long periods of wear, after removing them there was some slight pain. I also own a pair of Skullcandy Hesh over ears, and the iBeats again sound better than the Skullcandies. While I would recommend the Hesh to anyone on a budget looking for good sound for your money, I would recommend iBeats as well to anyone that can afford them. The ControlTalk feature is nice for the iBeats as well, and I've had no complaints from anyone on the other end of my phone. If I had one complaint it would have to be that the ControlTalk on cable volume and music control feature does not work on the iPhone 3G, but I recently upgraded to the iPhone 4 and cannot complain about that now. The thing I can't give enough praise about is the noise cancellation. iBeats block out almost all outside sound, and you dont have to jack the volume up extremely high to do it. Simply put, it is excellent. All in all, these are the best sounding ear buds I've ever heard, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to friend or family.

Beats by Dr. Dre Solo White On-ear Headphones with ControlTalk Review

Beats by Dr. Dre Solo White On-ear Headphones with ControlTalk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Last year, I tried out a pair of Beats Studio noise-cancelling headphones at an Apple Store and, upon listening to the music selection, decided that it was the best sounding headphones I had ever listened to. I was impressed enough that I was tempted to purchase them on the spot...but I had some hesitations which led me to walk out empty-handed. The caveats then were:
-Battery required for operation (due to the noise-cancelling function, which I didn't need)
-Large size
-The plastic material felt cheap and likely to crack easily
-and of course, the price (about three-hundred fifty USD at the time)
The sound of the Beats Studio had "haunted" me since, as I searched in vain for a cheaper and better quality pair of headphones which matched or beat that sound. I tried pairs from Grado, Ultimate Ears, Sennheiser, Bose, but never felt satisfied with the sound quality as I had with the Beats Studio. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, I learned that these headphones, the Beats Solo, were coming out. I saw that the price was below two-hundred USD and ordered them immediately. My hope was that the sound quality would be just as good as the more expensive Beats Studio.
These headphones have met all my expectations. The sound is truly amazing and I can clearly hear so much detail in my music. The headphones do a swell job of projecting the background detail enough, but not too much that it drowns out the rest of the music. Also, the bass is slightly amplified so you hear some slight "thump thump" but is definitely not overpowering like "THUMP! THUMP!"
As for the caveats that I had with the more expensive Beats Studio, they are all addressed to my satisfaction with the Beats Solo:
+These headphones are not noise-cancelling, and as a result do not use a battery. They are simply plug-in headphones without an on/off switch.
+The Beats Solo is more compact than and not as bulky as the Studio phones. They also fold and can be stored in the included neoprene carrying pouch.
+The quality of the plastic in these phones is much superior. These phones feel solid and worth the price.
+The price is still high, but I believe it's more reasonable.
There are some other differences that are noteworthy about the Beats Solo over the Beats Studio:
+The Solo headphones are worn so that they rest on TOP of your ear, and not surrounding them. If you are familiar with Bose's line of headphones, then the Beats Solo would compare to the Bose On-Ear headphones. The Studio phones, however, fit around the ear and would compare to the Bose QC2/Quiet Comfort 15 phones.
+The cheaper Solo headphones have a 3-year warranty vs. 1-year warranty for the more expensive Studio headphones. (Interesting...)
+While both headphones include a cable with a mic that can be used with an iPhone or similar phones, the Solo headphone cord also has a remote control that can control the volume and other functions. However, this feature isn't perfect. The button that controls playback functions is too small that I typically would hit the volume button at the same time. Also, I tried using the phones while making calls with my iPhone 3GS, and the people on the other end complained that they heard a substantial amount of background noise.
In conclusion, I believe the Beats Solo headphones have excellent sound, quality construction and sleek design which make them worthy of their price. They are, in my mind, a better buy than the more expensive Beats Studio headphones. Only if you are a frequent flyer who would benefit from noise-cancelling should you consider buying the Studio headphones. Otherwise, the Solo headphones are the ones to get.

EDIT (February 25, 2010) - Apparently Monster has decided to shorten the warranty on the Beats Solo to 1 year only. I went into the Apple Store today where I had purchased my set and saw that of the stock they have, a few of the units had "Three Year Limited Warranty" written on the box (lower part of the left spine) while the rest had "One Year Limited Warranty" instead. I spoke with one of the Apple Store guys who confirmed that the 1-year warranty units were their newer stock. I wouldn't consider this a reason to take off any stars since I still think these are great headphones; I guess Monster chose to match Bose and Sony in regards to the warranty length, which is indeed a shame.
Thanks to Suzie Mcleod for first discovering this change.--------------------------
EDIT (December 16, 2010) - Thought I'd add a little update that after owning these headphones for more than 1 year, they're still working great for me! I noticed many of the negative reviews about the head band breaking; mine has not broken fortunately, but I've been very gentle with my headphones and have been careful to not overstretch the band when putting them on. I'd say if you're careful and patient enough to take a few extra seconds when putting on these phones, you shouldn't have to worry about the head band breaking. As for the sound quality, I still think it's terrific. I recently did an accidental comparison of these phones to my pair of Ultimate Ears 700 earbuds (which I've also given a positive review of here on Amazon). Basically I had taken off the Beats and put on the Ultimate Ears buds immediately as I was heading out of the house. I had never done that before. The difference in sound quality was very noticeable, like night and day. The Beats headphones trumped the Ultimate Ears. With the Beats, I felt like I was in a concert hall listening to the music, and the details were noticeable. With the earbuds, I felt like I was listening to the music through a tin can. The sound quality felt cheap and awful, and the detail was not as impressive. Granted, this could be a common comparison between a pair of full-size headphones like the Beats and a pair of in-ear buds. Nevertheless, I thought I'd throw it out here just to give my perspective. I still highly recommend these phones.

PowerBeats Sport Headphones From Monster? - In-Ear w/ Sport Hook - White Review

PowerBeats Sport Headphones From Monster? - In-Ear w/ Sport Hook - White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The headphones sound nice, and make a good secure fit on the head.
However, the plug is the worst design ever. The headset cable comes straight out of the plug -- a rather large plug. This means that even with no tension at all, the cable will naturally pull and create an angle at the plug. These are marketed as "sport" headphones -- so doing anything active with the plug in place, every time your body moves the cord will get pulled against the plug. Within less than two months mine developed a short at the plug. No surprise.
It's sad too, because otherwise these headphones are really nice. If I compare these to a $20 pair of cheap headphones I have, the plug on those is at a 90 degree angle and has an extra rubber piece to help eliminate tension on the cable movement where it connects to the plug. How can headphones so expensive not have the same common sense design that headphones since the walkman era have had?
See my uploaded picture to see what the plug looks like. In the picture I'm purposely pinching the plug and cord in the same hand so there is no tension on the cord, just the natural effect of gravity.

Monster Turbine High-Performance In-Ear Speakers Review

Monster Turbine High-Performance In-Ear Speakers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have eclectic and diverse tastes in music. My first love is classical music -- particular Bach Unaccompanied Violin and Cello, Mahler, Brahms, and piano music. But, as a "child of the 80s", I also like Annie Lennox, Police, Jesus Jones, Alanis Morrisette, Beastie Boys, Guns and Roses... you get the idea.
I live in cubicle-ville and my music is my salvation. I have two sets of headphones that I will rotate depending on comfort. The first is a set of Shure Shure E500PTH Sound Isolating Earphones which cost close to $500.00 bucks. They are great in-ear headphones and really close out the sounds from the rest of the world. Unfortunately, you have to jam them in pretty good to get a good seal and being in-ear head phones, you have ear-hygiene issues where you can wind up giving yourself a middle ear infection if you don't keep them clean.
When I don't feel like jamming something into my ears, I also have a set of Denon Denon AH-D5000 Reference Headphones that are over ear closed design. These also run about 500 bucks. Again, great sound. However, big and bulky and they don't block sound as effectively as in-ear headphones.
I decided to try the Monster Turbine because they claim to be comparable in quality with the high-end headphones (like Grado and Shure) but at a fraction of the price.
First thing I did was use the tree-shaped tips. I have these on my Shures and find them very comfortable for staying in the ear and blocking sound. I plugged them into my Nokia N96 phone and turned on one of my songs. The sound quality was TERRIBLE! Buzzing, muddy. I thought, uh oh. Then I decided to try them on our home stereo system (using an adapter plug) and so glad i did. The sound became crystal clear. I realized it must have been the source of the music -- not the headphones themselves.
Finally, I plugged them into my computer figuring that would be the ultimate test. I'm happy to report that they sound WONDERFUL. Every bit as good as my Shures but more comfortable because you don't have to jam them in as much. In fact, if you do stick them in too far, you will find the sound quality is not as clear and is more muddy.
There is solid base -- just listen to Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue to hear the deep rumble. However, the high ranges are crystal clear as well -- listening to the Bach Chaconne sounds so sweet and beautiful. Rock and Roll, alternative and grunge also sound great.
A word about keeping these things clean. The instructions recommend removing the tips regularly and washing in warm water. However, my experience is that you really should wipe these off every time you where them to kill the germs. If you use the same type of wipes that are designed for LCD screen, you will be able to remove the bacteria and crud that builds up but not damage the ear pieces themselves. You can also buy replacement tree earpieces that are designed for the Shures but will also fit on these: Shure EA306 Triple Flange Sleeves for E3c, E3g, E4c, E4g, E5c, I3, I4c, E3c-n and E4c-n models. Clean ears are happy ears ;-)
Before I got these, I was skeptical because of all the one-star reviews. However, after doing some research, I realized that one's preference for headphones (and their makers) can turn into something akin to a holy war and took some of those reviews with a grain of salt.

What Critics Are Saying About Monster Turbine
"Looks like Monster is doing more than just diversifying itself: It is serious about being a player in the headphone market." --David Worthington, Technologizer
"We got a chance to try them out for ourselves and they are indeed very powerful and with an amazing amount of clarity for in-ear headphones...from the time we've spent so far with them - they're worth every penny." --Helena Stone, Chip Chick
"Monster's Turbine in-ear headphone delivers excellent sound quality, with strong bass; robust, all metal construction; handsome carry case." --Steve Guttenberg, CNET.com
"Monster hit their mark with the Turbines and listeners, both casual and discerning, will be satisfied with both their quality and value." --Sal Cangeloso, Geek.com
"All in all, the Turbines are a nice entry into the in-ear headphone arena by Monster, and fantastic sound quality for the price—just make sure your music lives up to their high standards." --Benny Goldman, Gizmodo.com
"…big sound, good bass, and comfort that you\'d expect from full size high-end speakers." --Richard M. Sherwin, ElectronicHouse.com
"How do they sound? In a word, fantastic." --Aric Annear, End User
"At last, killer ear buds!" --Tommy Shaw, Styx
"When paired with any of my portable devices (or non-portable ones for that matter) the Turbines sounded great. As promised, they deliver better bass than almost any other product at the price level, balanced out by solid mids and pretty clear highs. If volume is an issue for you, don\'t worry, the Turbines can get quite loud without distortion, a feat that many in-ear headphones cannot accomplish." --- Sal Cangeloso, geek.com
"... let\'s do talk about sound. It\'s stellar. Monster calls these "in-ear speakers" instead of "in-ear headphones" because they feel the sound is that good, and it\'s not far from that. The audio is clear and full with impressive (but not muddy) bass for both music and games; sometimes annoyingly so, but that\'s my own fault. Remember when you thought a 128 kbps bit rate was fine for your MP3s? You\'re going to be paying for that with these headphones, because you\'ll definitely hear all of the imperfections. It\'s a fair trade-off, though, because you\'ll also hear bits of your music that are lost on cheaper headphones."- Kirk Hiner, appletell.com
The Turbine Pros are surely the best ear-bud-type headphones I've heard and ones I could be happy with for years to come. The Turbines are stylish, perform strongly across the board, are comfortable and built to last.- Todd Whitesel, Audio Video Revolution

Beats by Dr. Dre Tour High-Resolution In-Ear Headphones from Monster Review

Beats by Dr. Dre Tour High-Resolution In-Ear Headphones from Monster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned the Bose in-ear and V-moda Vibe, and these are hands down the best out of the three. I can't say these are better than highly acclaimed earphones like etymotics, but as an owner of three earphones in similar price ranges I can say these are the ones to get.
Let me start off and say that when I first tried these, I put them back in the box to return. On all the other in-ears I've tried I used the medium tips, so I assumed it'd be the same with these ones. I put on the medium round tips and the sound was horrible. I was really disappointed. But later on in the day I decided to try them again after reading that the large triple flange were the best tips. After doing this, and also turning sound check and EQ off, the sound was amazing! The v-modas are good for bass, but the monster beats have an all around better sound. I used to think the bose in-ear were really good but they are the worst of the three and I wouldn't recommend them.
The tips that work for me, and I think a lot of people, are pretty comfortable once you get use to them, but that takes awhile. They used to hurt my ears, but now I don't notice them at all. But they sort of clean out yours ears! Once u take them out it's kind of embarrassing how much gunk gets on them. If monster releases new replacement tips, these earphones would be a lot better. The tangle free cord really works, I've only had to really un-knot them once or twice.
I think a lot of people don't like these earphones because they didn't play around with them. I know every body's ears are different, but if you can find the right fit these earphones are amazing. Don't be turned off by the celebrity endorsement!

I've been searching for a set of ear buds to replace those awful OEM ipod buds. The 9mm Rain buds intrigued me as I needed something smaller than the ipod buds and I listen to a lot of music with horns and high ends. I've owned them for better than 2 weeks now and riding the tube to work has never been more enjoyable. I recommend these buds to people that have had comfort issues with the ipod buds and are looking for excellent performance and value. Very impressed with this product.

Diddybeats Designer In-Ear Headphones with ControlTalk (Black) Review

Diddybeats Designer In-Ear Headphones with ControlTalk (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my Diddy Beats on 8/4/2010 and I've been using them every day since.
Pros:
The bass. It's crazy. I love it. Has to be the best I've ever heard with in ear headphones
ControlTalk is great to answer the phone, music control, and controlling the volume
The flat wires are nice too
A lot of ear buds to select from
Great to exercise with
Cons:
The weight can cause discomfort from time to time
The shape and size of the headphones make them a little uncomfortable at times
The deal breaker:
The volume control stopped working. I've done some research and I do not appear to be alone with this problem. Sure they come with a one year warranty but what good is it if they can break in under two months. I am not rough on my headphones and I do not expect failure this soon. I just filled out my RMA so I hope the next pair hold up better.....
