Shure SE530PTH Sound Isolating Earphones with Push-To-Hear Control Review

Shure SE530PTH Sound Isolating Earphones with Push-To-Hear Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've already done your research and only want to know why I am qualifying my recommendation, skip down to near the bottom of my review. Otherwise, read on...
As most everyone says, these earphones are an absolute dream. The sound quality is amazing, better than the average home stereo and better than any headphones or earphones I've ever heard. Each side has two woofers and a tweeter.
It takes a little while to get used to properly inserting the phones and getting them situated just so, for optimal sound quality and noise isolation. But you get the hang of it before long, and then it's pretty easy.
The sound isolation works pretty well (if you have the phones situated properly in your ears). You get a good seal, which greatly reduces the amount of outside sound that can get in. I've found it works very, very well on airplanes and at the gym (the two noisiest environments I'm typically in).
In contrast, "noise-cancelling" headphones do not block outside noise, rather they add an electronically generated noise designed to cancel the frequencies of the outside noise. They require batteries, and I don't like that they are adding noise to what you're hearing. Some work better than others, but none that I've tried (including the famous and expensive Bose QC2s) work as well as the Shure line of sound-isolating earphones (the SE530 is the second pair I've owned in this line).
With earphones that sit inside the ear canal, comfort is extremely important. I find the SE530s comfortable for long periods of time. I often listen to my ipod in bed at night to help relax; if I fall asleep with the earphones in, my ears don't hurt when I wake up later (unlike all other earphones and headphones I've tried). Shure thoughtfully includes 9 different pairs of interchangable tips in varying sizes, so it is very likely most users will find at least one pair that is comfortable for them.
The modular aspect of the cabling is clever and very useful. The phones themselves have a very short cord. But Shure includes a variety of extension cords of different lengths, which allows you to have the right length cable in different situations.
One of these modular cables has a built-in volume control, handy for when your device doesn't have a volume control (or it's not accessible for whatever reason).
If you order the SE530PTH, you also get the push-to-hear module, which has a little mic and volume control. If you turn it on, it transmits sound from the mic into the headphones, allowing you to have a conversation with someone without removing the earphones. (Removing the earphones is easy, but putting them back in and getting a good seal takes a minute or so, especially for newbies.) I find the PTH to be a neat accessory. However, my wife pointed out that I can simply pause my ipod and then carry on a conversation just fine, w/o removing the earphones (the earphones still block outside noise, but not so much that you can't hear someone talking directly to you). So I don't think the PTH is particularly necessary. Amazon sells the SE530s with and without the PTH option. If you get it without PTH, you can always buy it separately, though it's cheaper to get them together.
The build quality is exceptional. The cords are thicker than any other headphones/earphones I've seen, and where they attach to the earphones or accessories is very well reinforced.
I also have a much cheaper pair of Shure noise isolating earphones, the E2c's. A week or two before the 2-year warranty was to expire, a short developed in the cable going to one side, so that if the cable jiggled at all, the sound would intermittently go out for a second or two. This was my fault - I had been using and abusing these things pretty hard - never using the included case, throwing them around, etc. But I sent them to Shure with a copy of my receipt for warranty service, and they sent me a brand new pair, no questions asked! (and quick turnaround!) The SE530s (and all Shure earphones) carry the same 2-year warranty.
In summary, I love the SE530's amazing sound quality, terrific build quality, and generous bundle of thoughtful accessories.
But now here is my qualification:
To know whether they're really worth the money, you'd really need to compare them to the SE420's (the next cheaper model in this line, about a hundred less than the 530s). Most of us who rave about the SE530s have only ever compared them to MUCH cheaper earphones. In my case, the Shure E2c's (about a hundred bucks) and a pair of Sennheiser cans (about half the price as the SE530's). Of course the 530s will blow away phones that are half the price or less.
But, what we should really know before spending our hard-earned dollars is whether the human ear can distinguish between the SE530's and SE420's. If not, we would be wasting an extra hundred bucks by purchasing the 530s.
Before buying, I searched for a good, objective review comparing the 420s and 530s. I could not find one from a reputable, objective source. So I had to make a choice between two risks: the risk of spending too much (buying the 530s when the 420s sound just as good) vs. the risk of not getting the best possible sound quality (buying the 420s to save money when the 530s are really better).
I decided that avoiding the second risk was more important to me than avoiding the first risk, so I picked the 530s. I was in the very fortunate position to be able to afford them. In my current situation (newly married, still paying for the engagement ring & honeymoon - though very happy!), I'm not sure I would still pick the 530s (though I would still want them badly).
So there you have it. Good luck with your purchase decision, and enjoy whatever earphones you end up getting!

These earphones include a 0.25-inch adapter that allows you to use them with home stereos and other devices with 0.25-inch jacks instead of 3.5-millimeter jacks. The SE530PTH package also includes a carrying case as a convenient, tangle-free storage solution, and a level attenuator that allows for comfortable listening from any high-output audio source. What's more, they even include an airline adapter that optimizes compatibility with European airplane armrests for overseas travel. iLuv Noise-Canceling Headphones with Bluetooth Wireless Technology (Black) Review

iLuv Noise-Canceling Headphones with Bluetooth Wireless Technology (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've tried out several pairs of noise canceling headphones and bluetooth headsets, and this one does its job well both in noise canceling (comparable to $100 pairs by audiotechnica, except it is not circumaural) and in bluetooth pairing (clearly excels over the Motorola S9)
Its bluetooth setting take a little getting used to, but once you know that you do not need to re-pair the headphones even if you switch between audio sources and that the play/pause button actually serves as a bluetooth-reconnect button if you wander out of range, they are really very intuitive.
The headphone's microchip sports two audio-modes instead of two audio streams for its Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (HQ music) and Hands Free Profile (mobile)... This surprised me at first, but it actually allows you to have a lot of freedom.
Battery life is great with a 10+ hours of continuous music streaming (experimentally) and a mere 1.5 hour (also experimental) charge time.
I can't say enough good things about this product. Asides from the mentioned items it also has great sound quality, and the fold-up ability is pretty handy for mobility.
The only two things I would've liked for it is to not look so cheap and to have came with a carrying pouch that is its size (and not like 3X larger)

Denon AH-C260 Acoustic Luxury In-Ear Headphones (Black) Review

Denon AH-C260 Acoustic Luxury In-Ear Headphones (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When reviewing a product like this, I think it's important to know the reviewers age - I'm in my 50s - I'm not listening to Kenye West and Jay-Z through these. I'm most likely listening to classical music, Sinatra, or folk-rock in the Dylan/Taylor range. And some pop.
Nor am I blasting them. Years playing keyboard in a band has already taken a minor toll. I keep the volume reasonable.
That said, these are good little earbuds. The midrange is clear and balanced, the bass is definitely there, and they fit as well as a set of earbuds will fit for 20-30 bucks. Their sound blocking is not as good as the pair of Shures that I owned, but then again, they are about 25% of the price.
Overall, these entry level Denons provide good sound quality for listening to your iPod as you travel, run, or just at home. You'd have to spend a lot more to get a signifiant upgrade in sound quality. As I said, proper fit at this price range is a hit and miss affair, but these seem pretty average.
Overall - good deal; I'm pleased!

WESTONE UM2 TRUE FIT DUAL DRIVER EARPHONES UM 2 Review

WESTONE UM2 TRUE FIT DUAL DRIVER EARPHONES UM 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As anyone considering shelling out $300 for a set of ear phones I read as many reviews as I could find and from as many sources. Almost universally the UM2 was very well rated and boasting of strong tight bass sold me. Another thing I found is that Westone has a stronghold on there venders pricing. $299 across the net as far as the eye could see. Always looking for a deal though I found a place with free shipping, and felt in my own small way "I'm stickin it to the man".
Now I can't claim to be audio engineer, or even an audiophile, but what I can say with all confidence is that I've heard and, or owned over 12 different pares of ear phones ranging in price from $10 to $500. With all this background research under my belt I think I've earned the right to an informed opinion and so that is what I offer.
Unfortunately I found the hard way the adage "you get what you pay for" dose apply the ear phone too. There was a time when I told myself I will not spend more than $50 on ear phones, then it was $100 until here I am hundreds of dollar out of pocket, but with a smile on my face. At the $50 level you get a flat loud sound that gives the impression that an ipod is not quite a match for a CD player. At the $100 (single driver) level you get one of two things. On one side you get what is call three dimensional sound-stage were it seems there is more than just a left & right speaker like with the UM1s. You hear subtle things like a singer shifting their feet during a song. On the other side you get big brain massaging bass and an energetic sound aka "fun to listen to".
In my way of thinking if you take both sides of the $100 level sound-stage and bass then combine them into one it should cost $200 right? No it's $300 and I must say I had a very hard time justifying that kind of money when I paid only $150 for my ipod. Well one fateful day the cord to my UM1s strayed too close to the stove burner and in a puff of plastic smoke I had my justification. Oh, I have been to the mountain top brother and sisters, and that mountain is UM2. I kick myself for holding out so long. I am constantly amazed at the quality and efficiency these ear phones. It's unreal how much bigger and real a song seems with these. The best part is they sounded great right out of the box, but with any speaker, or earphone they sound better as the break in. I can't put these thing down, it seems every time I hear them I like them more. I listen to everything classical, hip-hop, rock, jazz, electronic and I feel like I'm hearing most of it for the first time. To say it was worth the $300 is an understatement.
Ron M.

Sennheiser CX380 Sport Series II Noise Isolating Earbuds Review

Sennheiser CX380 Sport Series II Noise Isolating Earbuds
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by saying that I have been on a very expensive quest this past year to locate in-ear headphones which met what I thought were fairly reasonable standards. After all every manufacturer out there has some sports figure on the packaging so how hard could it be right? I needed headphones which were durable, stayed put while: running, using the elliptical as well as laying flat while lifting weights and doing crunches. Finally and most importantly they needed to be highly sweat resistant. The headphones needed to meet these criteria while sounding phenomenal. If you are reading this you have probably been on the same quest and can't believe what a pain it is to find something that meets such obvious standards. Well I'm happy to report that you need not look any further!
These ear buds are the best I have ever owned and let me tell you I have tried several. I have a drawer full of failed headsets which all managed to die right outside the return policy. The warranties are useless since they will only replace them with what you already have which you know will only fail in a few weeks (if you are that lucky).
Sound:
The sound from these headsets is very rich. These headsets are capable of fooling your senses. I've had to pause music thinking there was external sound when it turns out it was simply sounds and instruments I didn't know was in the song because it was inaudible with previous headsets I've owned. It is literally like rediscovering your own music collection. The bass gives you the feeling of having a mini subwoofer in your head. Unless you have been to way too many Slayer concerts the volume these headsets can reach is simply stunning and will over power even the noisiest environments all with NO distortion. The Chicago subway is no match for them. Even without them playing they actually block sound because of the snug fit. If your cardio is heavily dependent on you being able to get into a zone and tune the rest of the world out while focusing strictly on the rhythm of your music then this is a huge plus. When you purchase these it is absolutely imperative that you spend just a couple of minutes selecting from the three bud sizes included. Without a proper fit you will be disappointed.

They have been tugged, snagged in zippers, and I had to battle my cat for them at one point. Through it all they have managed to hold up. This is mainly because they didn't use plastic. Instead they used rubber. It makes a world of difference.
Staying put:
Simply put, they aren't going anywhere until you pull them out! I've run, used the elliptical, done weights, crunches, and through it all I was unable to shake them loose. Remember this is heavily dependent on selecting the correct size buds which are included in the package. The paperwork that comes with them tells you this but it doesn't tell you the other two factors that keep these in place. First, these headsets are designed so that the chord for the left ear bud is shorter than the right. These headphone are designed to go behind the head. Meaning you put the right ear-bud in from the back of your neck. Secondly, these headphones come with a clip. Attach the clip just an inch or two below the split for right and left ear. I usual clip to the collar of my shirt. These two things are just as important as finding a snug fit. If you don't run the headphone behind your head and place them in your ear, and if you don't clip it to your shirt, then the weight of the generous chord will pull them out once you get sweaty enough.
Sweat Resistance:
You are in the middle of your favorite work out jam. You are also about half way through the work out. Your heart rate is up, your breathing has synchronized, and you are totally focused. Then one of the ear buds starts sliding out so you grab it and push it back in trying to keep your pace. Then the music starts cutting out because you've inadvertently pushed a little sweat in when you reseated the bud. Now your music is in mono, you do what you can to try to revive the dead bud but its no use. You've got half a work out left and you know its going to be tedious because now its just you and the uncontrollable urge to stare at the timer. Sound familiar? I would say that perhaps 80% of my previous headphones have met their demise thanks to sweat. My cardio is very rigorous and when I'm done I'm usually drenched. These headphones have stood up to every soaking my brow can throw at them. As a testament to their resistance the instructions actually recommend running them under a light tap to clean them. Finally someone was listening!
These headphones have brought an abrupt end to my search and I hope this review has helped you do the same.

Ultimate Ears SuperFi 4vi Noise Isolating Earphones w/ Microphone Review

Ultimate Ears SuperFi 4vi Noise Isolating Earphones w/ Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love these buds. There are really only 3 choices for iPhone earbuds if you want the mic/control feature. I tried the UB7 Ultimate Buds Apple / Etymotic ER6i and the V-Moda Vibe Duos and these won out.
Etymotic ER6i are the same price, but not enough bass for me. They are a little bigger and not the most attractive. Only 90 day warranty. Uses the original iPhone cable which is good.
The Duos have WAY too much bass and weak highs. Some like them, but for me they sounded muddy and awful next to the UEs. The mic was big and bulky and the button was too small. The cloth cable makes noises in your ear when it rubs against your clothes. Really annoying. Mic isn't as good as the Apple phones.
The Super.fi's have a great design. Very light and I got a great fit. A really nice balanced sound. The button is a little hard to press at first, but after a while it loosens up and you get the hang of where to press - right in the middle. No other cons on these. The case is small and easy to carry. Every phones should come with a case this cool. Cable is the perfect length. Mic sounds as good if not better than the Apple phones. Nobody can tell I'm using a mic.
I hope this helps with a decision. I worked hard making this choice. You can't go wrong with these beautiful buds!!!

Etymotic Research HF2 Hands-Free Earphone Headset with Microphone (Cobalt Blue, iPhone Compatible) Review

Etymotic Research HF2 Hands-Free Earphone Headset with Microphone (Cobalt Blue, iPhone Compatible)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You've seen those people with earphone-mic combos for those phones - you know, *those* people who walk around, holding the mic up to their mouth, who might as well pull out the earphone and just hold the phone up to their ear. Are they uncomfortable, thinking that the mic won't pick up their voice, or are they compensating for a lackluster microphone? If the latter, that will not be necessary with the Etymotic HF2 earphone headset, whose mic is every bit as strong as the one built into most phones, if not better.
I tested this set with an Iphone 3G, and those on the other end were not able to guess that I was on a headset microphone rather than the Iphone's admittedly high-quality mic - that's a great compliment right there. The mic, which hangs about three inches below the right earphone, seems to be able to filter out background noises, as well. As for controls, it's simple - there's one button on rectangular microphone unit. Press once to answer or hang up a call, twice to send a call to voicemail.
As for sound quality of the headphones, they're fantastic, and that's no surprise given the pedigree associated with the Etymotic name. I'm an Ety fan - I have a pair of Ety ER6i as well as their "big brother" the ER4P, and the sound quality of the HF2 ranks right around the ER6i, which should be excellent for most people. Those not familiar with the "Etymotic sound," it is extremely clean, and many may find it lacking in bass, but it is very true to the recorded sound, unlike many other cheaper (and sometimes similarly priced) earphones. What you hear with Etymotics is a very accurate, if sometimes stark, representation of the sound that the artists captured. They are not good headphones for those looking for huge bass response. Those who enjoy jazz and great detail in their music might just love the Etymotic sound - they truly are an audiophile company. And when it comes to calls, there's also a small thrill to be had that first time you talk to someone and hear them in stereo through these earphones if you've never experienced it before. The world is blocked out due to the earphones' superior sound-dampening abilities, and the caller on the other end is extremely clear.
A note about fit and sound quality: these in-ear 'phone are meant to seat deep in your ear, sealed with your ear canal. When seated properly, they will deliver incredible sound quality and beautiful, solid bass - but not the deep, head-rattling bass you may be accustomed to from other head-and ear-phones. If they aren't seated properly, wet the tip just slightly, insert, and then turn just a bit to get them "snug down." The fit shouldn't hurt, but may feel odd at first. I found it took some getting used to and, yes, you will likely notice some earwax - you are, afterall, closing up your ears, so they will get warm. Clean the triple-flange tips from time to time and make sure your ears are as clean as possible. It sounds like a ritual, but it really is worth it for the extrmely high sound quality these earphones are capable of creating.
Other small details: where the two wires for the earphones connect to join into one is a slider to sinch up the wires . . . I assume if you want them close to your neck? Included on the wire is a clip that I found more annoying and cumbersome than useful. Thoughtful, yes, but not easy to remove, and I feared damaging the wire sleeve in doing so, so it stayed put. It simply made winding the wires up to put into the handy zipped leather pouch a job a little more clumsy than necessary. Also included are foam tips and smaller triple-flange tips for the earphones, replacement filters, and a filter replacement tool.
For owners of the first generation Iphone, the headphone jack is sized to fit into the recessed jack - no need for an awkward adapter.
So why only four stars if I enjoy these so much? (It would really be 4.5 stars if Amazon would let me offer it.) I balk a little at paying almost the price of the 8gb Iphone for a mic/earphone headset, even as high-quality as this one is. Another thing, and this is true of any headset, and so I don't mark this one down for it, your speaking voice does not come through the earphones. Normally that's not such an issue, but when you are listening to the other party in stereo, and you can only hear yourself as if through plugged ears, it's a little disorienting, and I found myself fighting the urge to speak louder. It would be nice if there were some way for your voice to be able to feedback into the earphones.
Overall, however, these are fantastic - miles above most typical headsets, but the price reflects that, too. If you spend a significant amount of time both listening to music and talking on your phone, and you truly treasure sound quality, these may make perfect sense.

Philips HN060/37 Noise-Canceling Earbuds Review

Philips HN060/37 Noise-Canceling Earbuds
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These are nice earplugs. They fit into my ears well, though they probably won't fit EVERYONE'S ears as well. Plus, some folks just won't like wearing plugs that fit so deeply into the ear canal; those people should avoid the HN060. The generic earpiece fits snugly enough for me, but it's not a custom earpiece, so one shouldn't expect it to be perfect for all ears--Philips should have provided multiple sizes with the HN060, like those provided with Koss ear buds.
Sound is decent enough, though it's certainly no Grado headphone, nor is it remotely close to the sound provided by an enclosed earpiece. No thumping bass, but a reasonably good frequency response in the mids and highs. The snugness of the earpiece does affect the sound quality; the better they fit, the better the sound will be, and the less ambient noise will sneak in. I listen predominantly to classical, swing, and horn-driven jazz, all of which sound rather nice with the HN060. I do not think those interested in heavy bass-driven music will be satisfied with these plugs.
The noise reduction features work well enough to reduce the fan noise of a close-by stack of servers. Airplane noise, air conditioner noise, and other steady amibients are reduced quite noticeably. Don't get these thinking you're going to be immersed in silence--you're kidding yourself. I'm satisfied, but feel that full enclosure headphones do almost as well at noise reduction.
The cloth-wrapped cord is very nice, as is the neck strap. This brings me to the only con I've found, the LENGTH of the cord is just not adequate except for use with wearable audio devices--a problem that most manufacturers seem to have developed.
Overall, a good buy for those inclined to like in-ear plugs. Others should avoid them solely for comfort issues.

Nokia BH-503 Bluetooth Stereo Headset (black (with red side button)) Review

Nokia BH-503 Bluetooth Stereo Headset (black (with red side button))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So fed up with the appalling performance, quality and durability of other products - see my other feedbacks especially on Blue Ant - that I have had to date that I was determined to get the best eventually. Nokia's BH-501 or Cardo-S2 was on my mind but given the fragility of these high performing headsets, I decided to venture out a bit and see the latest of headsets, read some reviews of Nokia's upgrade to my snapped BH-501 (twice)- the BH-503... here is my story!
Unbelievable!
This product was instantly impressive on opening it up from its cute box - just got mine through Ebay this morning - very stylish, lightweight, impressively sturdy (not at all fragile like its predeccessor BH-501 which snapped on both occasions) with the most fragile part(back of neck of the earlier BH-501) now solidly reinforced - just like the fine Motorola HT820.
The ear speakers' padding are well sealed into the frame, ok you cannot fold the headset but hey, who cares? Nokia provided a protective carry bag which does the job. I was also impressed with the flatness which somehow made it appear flatter on the head - not like an alien when looked at from the wearer's front profile.
The colour combination - overall black with a touch of red areas around the ear speakers - is just right and gives it a fashionable look and "not-too-in-your-face" colours.
When taking it off, there is enough reassuring flexibility that will not break. And when you then place it down on a flat surface, it sits well-balanced on the surface. Without a doubt, Nokia has put a lot of efforts and thoughts into this headset and its design that I don't see a match for them yet....and I am watching and testing.
Since I did not have the time to first charge it before use, I know enough about these bluetooth devices to know that they have enough charge to test the headset. With a quick glance at the slim user guide, controlling the headset is a doodle, even the most technologically-challenge must praise Nokia for child-friendly operateability.
I paired with my HTC 7500 phone and quick as a flash, it is paired.....
Now to the sound.....I connected as usual to Sky.FM Smooth jazz radio and the music output, clarity, astonishingly balanced bass and treble tuned perfectly gave that exceptional stereophonic feeling that it brought smile to my face :) The maximum level can blow your eardrums if not careful! How do they manage this?!? This is equally true for speech
streams too....used BBC radio 4 RantRadio Talk and WNYC - AM speech radio outputs!
Finally, I made a couple of phone calls, and there was no complaints of non-clarity of speech, muffled speech etc...I even asked a recipient if they can hear me properly and he said perfectly clear! say no more... Oh by the way, the reserved charge on this Nokia lasted well into my 1.5hours journey to work and still going strong. I then topped up the charge to full in less than 2 hours!
Mike's Verdict:
================
For just £55 (UK) it is worth every penny tagged to it! When I consider that the very expensive but cheap, tacky Blue Ant X5 headset with ineffective protruding micriophone that makes one look like a call centre operator, charged 'an arm and a leg' essentially a crap product, then its with gratefulness to have this high-class product.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS IS THE BEST HEADSET THAT I HAVE RECIEVED FROM ANY BLUETOOTH HEADSET!!!!!!!
WELL DONE TO NOKIA.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
**** UPDATES ****
18 or so months later......
There has been no day that has gone by, that I have not used this headset as it is my only headset for my handset, wired are absolutely rubbish with superior handset like the HTC Advantage 7500 (that's mine!), and besides I hate the ideas of wires all over my head ...and ...face....;)
I am looking at this headset on my desk right now, and believe it or not, despite the all-waether DAILY wear and tear it is has been subjected to, there has been not degradation of anything on this headset, no expansion in the head-wrap, no loss or tear of ear pads on either side of the ears, the mic is clear with not particle obstructions, ALL functions buttons and actually quality of sound produced is still as perfect. This is unbelievable, there nothing like this ever seen, its just made like the old solid-state electronics goods - that NEVER breaks down! I have bought extra should, if per chance, it eventually just gets crushed by a truck (it has so far succeeded in drop from my head and stepped on) or dropped inside the Atlantic ocean (so far it has succeeded in light and heavy rain)! Potential buyers WILL NOT REGRET investment in this product, if you do then something is wrong....with the user ;)
---------------------------------------
!!! WELL DONE ONCE AGAIN TO NOKIA !!!!! .....for such a wonderful piece of gadget, that nothing else compares to!!!!
---------------------------------------
DISCLAIMER:
I do not have any affiliation with/to Nokia, nor represent Nokia in any way shape or form! I am just a delighted customer that love to praise manufacturers or sellers when things are good and complains likewise when products are rubbish! I hope this helps.

Ultimate Ears TripleFi 10vi Noise Isolating Earphones w/ Microphone Review

Ultimate Ears TripleFi 10vi Noise Isolating Earphones w/ Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These Buds come with the full arsenal for a great listening experience. They come with four types of buds, one type a foam kind that fits to your ear perfectly, so they are what I use. And when you put them in, you can't hear anything outside or around you. Airplanes with crying babies are no match; the buds cancel ambient noise by design.
The main selling point for me was the iPhone compatibility, with the mic and play button. Works great, and the only complain from a realllly picky perspective would be that the button be right below the mic, instead of on the main chord, as the mic and button are separate on the chord. But it makes no difference.
Another thing I like is the wire that comes out of the bud end. There is a wire about 2 inches long inside the cord that you can bend so when you put them over your ear they stay in place, which is great when I run and move around. They are large, due to the three drivers in each bud, but are worth it. From low to high frequency, they play music back as accurately as possible.
I record my music in lossless formats on my computer, so playback comes at CD quality. After a couple weeks of listening, this is what I found: Bass is strong. Now I wouldn't use these phones for a DJ or anyone whose only concern is bass, but every low chord or beat comes out as if you were right there playing it yourself. But this is what got me. The best sound quality for these speakers comes in the mid-high to high frequencies. It doesn't matter how high the sound is, be it a trumpet blaring, guitar at high E with cymbal crashes, or a female soprano hitting the highs, the speakers won't crack or fuzz like cheap headphones, and when comparing them to the generic iPhone ones I regretfully was using before, the difference is extremely pleasant and refreshing. This is quite something, since the first thing I listen to is Bass quality, so for the crisp highs to take away my attention from Bass is saying something.
One last thing for the listening experience that is a great joy to listen to is their reproduction of the sound itself. Some speakers make you feel like you're in the studio, others make you feel like you're listening by the studio, and each headphone is different. This is called sound stage, and the UE's reproduce it very well. Unamped, they can put you there
The case is great (practical) and I use it all the time, as well as the extender when I need to. For Audiophiles such as me, pictures and specs are on their website at [...]. They show you how to wrap the cord around your ear like i explained earlier, which is nice.
I have many headphones, including AKG 701's, Sennheiser HD 650's, Sony MDR-F1's, Shure and those V-moda's, among mannnnyyy others. For an earbud, these rank among the top of the list, and I would reccommend them to anyone.

Bose® Mobile In-Ear Headphones with Microphone - White Review

Boseandreg; Mobile In-Ear Headphones with Microphone - White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is so darn comfortable. Way more comfortable than traditional-style earbuds. I was looking for a set of earbuds to replace my defective V-Moda earbuds w/mic. This aforementioned set needed to have excellent sound quality as well as a mic for phone calls. I looked into many brands and I decided to go Bose after reading reviews. What I do like about the Bose package is this: The comfort factor is perfect. Some positive remarks for this set is it has well-made construction(cable wires feel nice and thick), the carrying case is wonderful to hold the set and even big enough to fit both the set and the iphone, the extra silicone ear tips proved useful, and the headphone jack looks of higher quality (gold plated) than standard headphone jacks. Call voice clarity is very good on both ends of the call and the call/end, music play/pause button works well. The bad: Does not have volume up/down or music track forward/reverse remote in-line control. It doesn't create an air tight seal with the opening of your ear. This draw-back hinders bass from hitting deep and hard. They sit in the bowl of your ear before the canal and have a tiny neck that protrudes and sit in the hole of your ear. (My V-Moda's hit bass really good but...didn't last long) Cable wires can get tangled if you're careless and just shove them in your pocket. Also the mic needs to be positioned well to work properly. Overall, if your main concern in buying these is good music clarity with phone call capabilities...go for it. If you expect audiophile level performance in music(these aren't Grado's) than invest in a more sealed type of earbud set, otherwise go for a full over the head/ear headphone set like some Grado's or Beyerdynamics. BTW this set sounds awesome with a headphone amp like the Pa2v2 from eletric-avenue or the Fiio E5/E1. The call capabilities WILL NOT work with this set if not plugged directly into the phone. I hope this review helps tip the scales in your decision, good luck!

Etymotic Research HF5 Portable In-Ear Earphones (Cobalt) Review

Etymotic Research HF5 Portable In-Ear Earphones (Cobalt)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using the Etymotic ER-4 for years and recently just bought the HF5. When I first got the ER-4's years ago, my friends first thought I was crazy for paying $275. But I listen to all my music while commuting on the train. If you loved music as much as I do, would you spend that much on a pair of speakers for your home stereo, or skimp and spend $50?
The ER-4 delivered like no other earphones, with not only the sound quality, but the noise reduction. As someone once said "It's the closest thing there is to injecting the music right into your brain." I completely agree. It took some getting used to 'listening' to the bass as opposed to feeling it, but now these are irreplaceable.
I have bought several pair of the ER-4's due to damage, losing them, etc. And it was time to replace my current pair. I decided to get Etymotics newest model, the HF5. I didn't expect a huge improvement over the ER-4's, but I was wrong.
At first I felt like the earphones didn't fit as well as the ER-4's. But then I realized that these actually go DEEPER into your ears than the ER-4's. And once I got them in there... WOW! The sound was actually so much bigger and brighter than the ER-4's. The ER-4's were great, but the HF5's is like watching High Definition Television compared to regular TV. The highs are brighter and the bass is bigger.
The only thing I wasn't happy with, at first, is the cord. They seem to have switched back to the more grabby rubbery style cord as opposed to the smoother plastic. While the rubbery feels nicer, I was worried it would grab onto my clothes too much. That hasn't been a problem so far.
They could have also included a few extra filters. The filters need to be changed every few months when they get gunked up with earwax. This model only includes one spare, and it would have been great to include more.
Other than that I would say these earphones are superb and worth every penny.
Eric Monse

Bose® Mobile On-Ear Headphones (41314) with Carrying Case and Microphone - Black Review

Boseandreg; Mobile On-Ear Headphones (41314) with Carrying Case and Microphone - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like Bose products and have several. Yes, true audiophiles sneer and yes, the brand is overhyped but they work for me! The sound quality is as good as I can hear and the fit and finish is above most other products. I have returned several competitors' products.
But they left out a critical feature. The iPhone headset has inline mic and a little button built into the "bulge" where the mic is. This button allows you take an incoming call or to pause your music. The Bose people left the button out -- the music ramps down when you dial a call but, this is the key thing, you have to take the iPhone out of your pocket to answer a call or to pause the music. What were they thinking?
So if you're cutting the grass and taking advantage of the noise cancelling feature and your wife tries to speak you have to: (1) pull the phone from your pocket or case, (2) swipe your finger to activate the screen, (3) switch to iTunes and your song, (4)hit the pause screen button. Is your wife more patient than mine?
Shure makes a replacement cable (just like Bose) that includes a button. It's a little bigger and clunkier than Apple's barely noticeable squeeze-the-bulge button, but hey, it's there. Bose does not include a button on their replacement cable either.
This is what happens when you don't have good user trials. A major mistake on an otherwise fine product. I cannot recommend this product to anyone who has ever been interrupted or received a call while listening to music. Which is pretty much everybody. Wait for the next generation...

AKG K 450 Premium Foldable Headphone Review

AKG K 450 Premium Foldable Headphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
AKG's K 450 are titled "Premium Foldable Headphones" -- they are exceptionally good headphones for travel. I bought mine two months ago. I broke them in through continuous playing for about seven or eight days. I haven't found a high quality hp that didn't benefit greatly from such a ritual. I've taken the 450's on business trips and use them at home as well, while working. They are light, comfortable, well-built, and easily fold up for trips.
I'm listening to Richard Goode's recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 as I write this review. Here are my notes. The sound-stage is stable and offers a full stage for the orchestra. First and second violins are separate, distinct, and well balanced. The violas and cellos have their own places. I can easily distinguish cello and bass parts. String tone is exquisite: soft and tectured with no sign of shrillness. Piano and orchestra are balanced and filled with nuance. Woodwinds are easily distinguished by tone and location on the stage. When asked to "chirp" that's exactly how the oboe section sounds. Right now soloist and orchestra are putting out a lot of sound -- I can hear high strings and winds balanced against the piano, with excellent (nondistorted) bass notes form the low strings.
Just now I switched to Peter and the Wolf (Ormandy's recording) to see if I could distinguish the french horns playing the wolf's theme; I could and followed the three parts without trouble. Vocals (Bach BWV 207, for instance) are almost too good to stop. For all of this I had the K 450's plugged straight into my iPOD. The 450's sound better with a hp amp and even better with a DAC + hp amp! The AKG K 450's are highly recommended. Five stars.

I love these earphones, and they do exactly what they say they do: great sound, but they still allow you to hear external noise. Super comfortable--maybe the most comfortable headset I've ever owned.
However, I have had one problem with them... when I'm using them on a call, the people I'm talking to often tell me there's an echo (they can hear their own voice). Taking out the headset fixes this, so it must be what's causing the problem.
It seems to improve if I turn the volume down, so for now I'm trying to see if I can make them work, because other than that, they're great.

Maxell UT/NB-2025 Digital Headphones with Ultra Thin Neckband and Pouch Review

Maxell UT/NB-2025 Digital Headphones with Ultra Thin Neckband and Pouch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not an audiophile, but decided to buy earphones for playing music in the evening when the TV is on in the next room. I bought these phones because of their price and frequency response numbers. Once I figured out that these fit on the back of the head, I found them very comfortable. There are no provisions for size adjustment, however. If you have a head bigger or smaller than average, or lots of hair, you may have a problem adjusting these headphones for a good fit. Some headphones snag on the user's hair. I had no such problem since I have no hair.
The sound produced by these headphones is good, not fabulous but more than acceptable. For the price, they're probably as good as any in the price range. On some songs, like one by Misty Edwards, I could actually hear her taking breaths during the song. I also heard some extra instrumental sounds not evident through my computer's speakers.
Voices have good quality with these headphones, but sometimes voices are overwhelmed by the instruments.
So far sounds have been clear and crisp with no static. Volume is adjusted with a lever on the headphone cord. Looking for concert hall quality sound? Pass on these. If you're just looking for a decent pair of headphones for a reasonable price, these may satisfy.
