Etymotic Research ER6i Isolator In-Ear Earphones (Black) Review

Etymotic Research ER6i Isolator In-Ear Earphones (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The white wires suggest Etymotic Research wants a bigger piece of the iPod upgrade market. But rather than simply giving the black-wired ER-6 a cosmetic makeover, they designed the ER-6i from the ground up to work around portables' puny output. Thus, they offer higher sensitivity (more sound for a given volume setting) and boosted bass response.
But despite their light weight and sporty appearance, these phones are optimized for home listening, commuting, and plane trips; applications where sound isolation is a benefit, not a hazard. Compare them, therefore, to active noise-canceling headphones, not conventional earbuds.
FIT & COMFORT
Because these phones go in your ear canal and require an airtight seal, proper fit is essential. Without it, you will get no bass at all. None. I prefer the disposable foam ear tips to the 3-flange ones (both kinds are included). Your results may vary.
Here's the trick: After you compress the foam and insert them in your ears, it takes several seconds for the foam to expand. Focus on available background noise. When the sound drops suddenly over a second or two, you know a seal has been formed. Conversely, with music playing, you should notice the sound suddenly fill out, first in one ear and then the next.
The foam ear tips may feel uncomfortable for 2-3 minutes, but you quickly get used to them. This naturally depends on ear geometry and other factors, but be aware that you wouldn't buy these phones on comfort alone.
SOUND DAMPING
Properly inserted, the foam ear tips provide 34-36 dB noise reduction (the triple flanged ear tips are a few decibels less effective). To put this in perspective, this is even better than the 29-31 dB NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) provided by better-quality shooting ear muffs. They also quiet more than active noise canceling headphones (which feature feedback circuitry that noticeably degrades the sound).
With this level of damping, you may be aware that a TV is on in the same room, but just barely. You will also save your hearing because you won't feel the need to turn up the volume to drown out environmental noise.
The downside of this isolation is that you will miss doorbells, telephones, etc. Common sense argues strongly against using these jogging, bicycling, or even walking around city streets. You're giving up a sense entirely. The "look out, you idiot" you don't hear could be the "look out, you idiot" you absolutely, positively needed to hear.
SOUND QUALITY
Putting these phones through their paces with music I'm familiar with, the first thing that stood out was their neutral-to-bright balance. These are slightly more "forward" sounding than the more "laid back" or "polite" German headphones you might think of.
The second thing I noticed was that they get the midrange right. Without the response peaks, valleys or ripples that so often mar the critical 1,000 Hz. region, you will hear singers sound more "present" than with the vast majority of headphones (and most audiophile speakers for that matter).
If you are a bass junkie, you will find the bass lean. This is difficult to say, but it's not the headphones. It's you. You are addicted to heavy one-note bass (it's an epidemic - note how rental cars always have the bass at +10). Go cold turkey and listen with these for a week, however, and you will discover that there are actually, ahem, different bass notes.
As for treble, there are conventional open headphones (usually more expensive) with more "air" at the top end, but the ER-6i's treble extension is as good as sound-isolating headphones go - certainly better than the Bose. There's a minor response notch at 7 kHz, but nothing I really noticed.
BTW, don't be alarmed by their funny-looking frequency response curve. Remember, because they're in your ear, they are voiced to compensate for the missing frequency shaping ordinarily provided by your outer ear.
The sound damping has another beneficial effect: You will hear things in familiar recordings you have never heard before, even with high quality open headphones. Not just fingers over guitar strings, but sounds way, way down in the mix.
DESIGN & BUILD
These fingernail-sized phones are white with transparent side panels that reveal wires and the metal flanks of their balanced armature transducers. There is a small port topside, presumably for audio tuning, but perhaps also to reduce negative pressure caused by yanking the phones out (not a good idea - always remove them slowly). The front-facing side has the model number with a red dot separating the ER and 6i. The backs feature an oversized L and R, just like your first pair of sneakers.
The wires are lightweight, which is a more important factor on canal phones than with ear buds that allow the outer ear to bear the weight. The cord is a bit longer than some joggers might like, but then again, you shouldn't be using these jogging. The 1/8" headphone jack termination is gold-plated for long-term corrosion-resistance.
The removable shirt clip (included) should be used when practicable to avoid the sudden pressure on your eardrums that might result from yanking them out.
CONCLUSION
The ER-6i offers exceptionally involving, neutral sound for the money, with accurate bass and a commendably smooth midrange. I am also not aware of any headphones that provide better isolation from environmental noise. Recommended.

Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 Pro Noise Isolating Earphones (Black) Review

Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 Pro Noise Isolating Earphones (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a professional, classically trained musician and I have had these earphones for two weeks. I listen to mainly classical music, and have quite a collection of jazz and pop from various eras to which I listen as well. These earphones are wonderful. I did extensive research and returned several pairs of earphones (including Shure) before deciding on these.
These are canalphones, so you MUST have a good seal or you will not get proper sound. This means you have to choose the right fitting rubber inserts before they will work properly. The previous reviewer must have not fitted them properly because the sound is phenomenal when these are plugged in!
These phones have dual drivers for highs and lows. There is a lot of chatter on the internet about a weak high-end to these UE's, but I do not find that to be the case at all. The high-end is clear and defined. The strong low end, which is superb, may give many a scewed reference since most canalphones do not have good low ends, but the bass does not overpower the upper registers. Contrary to popular belief on the web, classical music sounds best when there is enough bass along with the highs. Just go to a live classical concert and listen for yourself! There is plenty of bass to go around! These phones are perfect for classical or for any type of music.
The other advantage to these phones is that you can change the wire and plugs yourself if they break or if you want a different cord of a different color. The earphones come with two nice cases, one all metal and the other in leather and the the accessorries all fit neatly together in the metal case.
Another nice feature is that there is little to no sound leakage. This means if you sleep with a significant-other, you won't disturb him or her at all. You should be careful when using them, because you won't hear much of anything other than the music.
The only downside is that these earphones will show you just how bad MP3 compression is on your player. I did a comparison with my CD player and discovered that even at 320 kbps, some of my MP3 files sound "distorted" compared to the CD. I did not notice this with my previous earphones.
If you're looking for great canalphones at a great price, then look no farther. I got mine at the Guitar Center and the sales person knocked $50 off the price, they are also the clear version. You can't go wrong with UE's proprietary monitor technology.

JAYS q-JAYS Dual Armature In-Ear Earphones (Black) Review

JAYS q-JAYS Dual Armature In-Ear Earphones (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my fourth pair of different in ear monitor headphones. My first were the Sony EX71, then Etymotic ER-6, then Sennheiser CX-300, now these the Q-Jays. The Q-Jays have the in my opinion a great mix of great sound, practicality, portability, and value that should make them extremely popular for a commuter who takes a subway or bus to work. First, the SOUND DAMPENING of these headphones is slightly higher than the Sennheisers and the Sonys, but not as much as the Etymotics. They claim it blocks out 90% of sounds. I don't know if that is accurate, but regardless, it is the ideal sound dampening level for me. The Etymotics needed to be "installed" deep in your ear, not the easy placement of the 71s or CX300s. They blocked out too much sound... they were dangerous to use while walking in the city. Additionally if the cord accidentally got caught on something and ripped the headphone out of your ear, there could be serious complications. The Q-jays are placed in your ear very similarly to the 71s and CX300s, perhaps a tiny bit deeper. Next the EFFICIENCY - Jays got it right. The CX300s are too efficient. They don't actually block out any hiss level of components, and if an announcement comes on during a Jet Blue flight while you are watching a movie, prepare to rip them out of your ears in pain. The Q-Jays are easily powered, but have enough resistance to avoid these unfortunate situations. BTW - The ER-6 are so inefficient, they cannot be powered by an ipod. Had the ER-6i been available at the time, that may have been at the correct efficiency level for me. On to arguably the most important factor - THE SOUND... and the Q-Jays sound great. A very balanced sound overall that produces much better imaging than any other IEMs I have tried. The highs and mids sound very smooth and realistic. Considering how small these headphones are, the sound is amazing. They bring the music to life over the CX-300 and the EX71. They can compete with large over the ear headphones in sound quality. These headphones are not bass heavy like the Sony EX71, and probably would require some equalization for ideal sounds with rap and techno music. Overall, the full spectrum of sound is achieved nicely to my ears.
The only bad part that I have found is that the cord is 2 feet long, if you want it to be longer, you then need an extension cord and the extension cord adds noticeable weight to your ears. This is a poor design decision... its designed for the portable music device to be placed in a front jacket pocket or on an armband... and while this works well, I think most users would be better served with a 3 or 4 ft cord. The extension cord when added to the headphones adds up to 5 ft of cord. This is too long. They should offer a 1.5 ft extension cord.
Overall, at $[...] I believe these are a good buy and a choice that I doubt anyone who takes the plunge will regret. If these are out of your price range, the CX300 are a good choice. If money was no object, I would still recommend these, as they are the smallest IEM on the market with great sound quality.
Update 4/29/08: I have had these headphones for a week now and can better assess their abilities. First off, the midrange and tweeter are still really impressive. I find myself being distracted when working and listening to these headphones, because I am constantly discovering new aspects of music that I am very familiar with. But the lack of low end especially at lower volumes has bothered me some. These headphones could absolutely make the low end required, as evidenced when you push the volume up a bit, but the low end frequencies seem to be approximately 5db less than I would like. It ends up sounding like a pair of very small high end bookshelf speakers. This could be corrected with some simple EQing, but unfortunately, the Ipod equalization programs are extremely disappointing, as they seem to boost the file pre-amplification, causing songs that have little headroom left to distort like crazy. Steve Jobs should be upset by this. And while this is not the q-jays fault, the lack of low end still leaves me wanting more. So as these headphones aren't quite as flat as I originally thought, I still recommend them, but this time with conditions. Regardless, a solid 4.5 star headphone, but bass heads need not apply.
Update 6/12/08
My love and appreciation for these headphones have grown. The issue with bass was a user issue and not a problem with the headphone. These headphones need to be placed deeper in your ear than the Sony 71s, and the default size of the earpiece that came installed on the q-jays was just a bit too large for proper placement in my ears. I changed sizes which was actually pretty difficult and the 5db of bass that i was looking for appeared. Overall, a very balanced headphone. Still not for bassheads, but a great choice for commuters listening to a wide variety of music.
Update 5/25/2010
Something I never really think about when buying a product is the warrantee. I just expect the product to work and the company to be reasonable. From what I hear, this is not the case with some headphone manufacturers - Logitech (Ultimate Ears). I wanted to highlight how fantastic Jays is in this regard. I had my first issue about 5 months into my ownership experience. The driver in one of the headphones stopped working. I emailed my retailer [...] and they took care of the issue and sent me a replacement set of headphones. [...] was provided quick responses and was very flexible in solving my problem. I was really happy with their service.
Almost 2 years from my initial purchase, I had a cable issue from daily use of the Q-Jays. The headphone jack or cord must have been damaged internally from wear and tear... I had sound dropping in and out, mono sound sometimes... it was unusable. I emailed [...], but as they had stopped carrying the product, the pointed me to deal with Jays directly. I contacted Jays via email and they gave me instructions on how to send the product back to them via USPS to Sweden. Turns out they couldn't fix the problem, so they sent me a complete new set even though I had only sent back just the headphones. This is pretty awesome, considering how much stuff comes with each set of Jays. Total turnaround including shipping time was 3 weeks.
With the amount of wear and tear headphones go through, it can be expected that there will be some failures. For a company to back up their product so well with minimal hassle, that is impressive.

Smart earphone design and a soft silicone sleeve, available in five sizes, enables the earphone to fit snugly in any ear. The sleeves are washable and allow you to keep them clean at all times.
JAYS Sound Isolating System reduces the background noise of modern life. With this silent setting you can experience an amazing sound experience even at low volumes.

HEAD-DIRECT RE0 In-ear Headphones Review

Much has been said on the sound quality of these phones. Yes, they sound phenomenal. They are extremely precise and extremely clear. You can't really fault them... unless sterile is not your preferred sound. They are analytical to a "fault"- while the bass can go way down, it may not be loud or boomy enough for some listeners. It's not that anything is missing, it's just that a lot of other IEMs deliver louder bass, though not necessarily with the clarity or range. Truth is, the range on these is superb for this price range. You just may not like the sound if you are too worried about booming bass (or too used to how emphasized it is in other, lower quality IEMs). I really don't mind, and totally would recommend them based on sound quality so long as you are looking for that particular signature (or lack thereof).
Having said that, I did run into a problem with with these phones: after six months, the left side stopped working. I'm not sure how prevalent this is, but an alarming number of other buyers here have had the problem, and a quick internet search shows even more. The product could still be worth it, but not from this seller: DBRoth, in an effort to keep their prices so low, will only replace a product within 7 days. HeadDirect's warranty does not extend to items bought through this seller. The price is the *exact* same on HeadDirect's site, so if you want to purchase these then I advise you to go through there instead.
The sound quality IS excellent, and had I found somebody willing to fix these I would still be able to recommend them, at least to those who like more a more analytical sound. However, there is no reason to buy them through this seller- they are no cheaper than the MSRP and price at HeadDirect's website, and are not covered by any warranty. Since there appears to be a very real possibility that these can fail, you should NOT buy them without the warranty.

PreludeBefore late February, I didn't know anything about MEElectronics. When I finally heard about the company and purchased my M9Ps, I realized that they were a company that I should keep my eye on. In the time since, I've had the chance to review their lower end IEM models, the SX-31 and M2s and I've been impressed by the both of them, in different ways. Now, I'm here with a review of the first generation M6 models, one of MEElectronics' higher end IEMs. These apparently share the same drivers as the M9s and M9Ps and if that's true, then I should be in for a pleasant experience. So, did the M6 IEMs live up to my expectations? Read on to find out.Packaging and AccessoriesThe first generation M6s ship in a black paper box that shows off the IEMs themselves through a transparent plastic window on the front. In terms of accessories, the M6s include an accessory pack that's incredibly similar to that shipped with the M9Ps, which is a very good thing. Inside the box, you'll find a clamshell hard case, three pairs of silicone single flange eartips, a pair of generic black foam tips (similar to Shure "olives"), an airplane adapter and a cable winder.

Design and Build QualityThe M6s are made of plastic that feels rather durable. The cable is somewhat thick and rubbery feeling but doesn't feel as though it would cause problems if not abused routinely. Inside the cable that leads out of the earpieces, there is a built in memory wire which helps route the cable over one's ears and stay in place once the earpieces have been inserted. I've heard complaints that the wire is too stiff but it was relatively soft and pliable in my experience. The cable terminates in a heat-shrink covered gold-plated straight plug and doesn't inspire confidence because of its lack of a proper strain relief. It's worth noting that the newer and more expensive M6s are equipped with a much better cable that features a properly relieved L-plug.Comfort and FitGetting these fitted can be a bit of a pain sometimes because of their over the ear design and the memory wire that's embedded within the cable near the earpieces themselves. The memory wire is soft and pliable but because of it being there, these aren't well suited to situations in which you'll constantly be taking them out of your ears. Once they are in your ears, they disappear. Using the included foam tips or Sony hybrids, I was able to get an effortless and comfortable seal. The earpieces sit flush with your ears and I found that it was easy to lie down on my side with my head against a pillow without sacrificing comfort. These are easily some of the most comfortable IEMs I've used. Isolation is rather decent as well with the right eartips but it's nothing spectacular.Sound QualityBurn in: As per my usual, these IEMs were given 25+ hours of burn in prior to review.Once again, MEElectronics has managed to impress me and even straight out of the box, I was enjoying the M6s. I will say that they sounded a bit hollow straight out of the box but after burning in for a few hours, it filled in nicely. In terms of bass, the low end is smooth, detailed and refined. That's a lot of adjectives but they all apply in some way, some more so than others. It's certainly a highlight of the presentation with more than enough boom and punch to make Hip-Hop and Electronic music stand out. That's not to say the bass is boomy, far from it. Bass is well controlled and doesn't overwhelm the rest of sound signature and rarely creeps up on the lower mids. The low end lacks the speed and extension of my RE0s but is certainly better in terms of quantity.Mids are smooth and full sounding, if recessed slightly. The detail and clarity in the midrange is impressive for the price with full bodied and natural vocals and a nice sense of space and airiness. Treble is slightly emphasized as well, like the bass, and treble extension and detail are both quite good for IEMs in this price range. It's worth noting as well that these boast marginally smoother and better refined highs than the M9s but slight harshness and sibilance can be heard on some higher notes. The sound signature is warm, full, and smooth with a very nice and dynamic tonal balance throughout the sonic spectrum. The soundstage is nearly as large as that of the M9s but not quite as airy and positioning and separation are both very good for the price. These work incredibly well with a wide range of genres, including the aforementioned Hip-Hop and Electronic and also Jazz, Classical and Alternative/Rock. While these can't match my RE0s in terms of overall quality, transparency and clarity, especially when it comes to the quality of the treble and neutrality, the M6s are very impressive in their own right, especially when you consider how inexpensive they are.Value and ConclusionThe maroon versions of the M6s are available for $30 on MEElectronics' website. The current generation model retails for $50 on the website but can be found for approximately $40 on websites such as Amazon and Overstock. At $30 for the first generation M6s, they are an absolute steal and you wouldn't be remiss in buying the more expensive versions for the improvements to the build quality either. Despite apparently sharing the same drivers as the M9s, they are definitely superior in every way besides airiness. The M6s deliver one of the most entertaining sound signatures I've heard in a while and are easily the most competent performers that I've heard in the sub $50 price range and even outside of that range, these perform well enough to be worth a look.

Sennheiser IE 8 Premium Audiophile In-Ear Noise Isolating Headphones Review

Sennheiser IE 8 Premium Audiophile In-Ear Noise Isolating Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For years the Etymotic ER-4 series, e.g., Etymotic ER-4P Portable In-Ear Earphones represented the top of the line among in-ear monitor headphones. The Etys remain a good product (and an excellent buy), delivering crisp detail and excellent treble reproduction, but their weakness has been relatively modest bass performance.
Recently a whole group of challengers has emerged, including, for example, Shure SE530PTH Sound Isolating Earphones with Push-To-Hear Control, Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 Pro Earphones Gun Metal Blue and the long-delayed, soon-to-be-released Westone 3. Consumers seeking audiophile sound from small in-ear monitors now face a veritable embarrassment of riches.
In competition against these other products, the Sennheiser IE 8 acquits itself well. These earphones are small, comfortable, and beautifully crafted. They come with a variety of ear tip flanges for a custom fit, and include a feature unique among small IEM's, an adjustable bass setting (you use a small screwdriver-like tool that is included in the package).
The sound quality is clean and clear, without even a trace of murkiness. The output level is a bit lower than the Shure 530's, meaning that if used with a low-powered device like an iPod you will need to set the volume level relatively high. This output is on a par with the Etymotic ER-4P's, but with superior bass performance. Very fine detail reproduction is slightly better than the Shures, but is a bit lower than the Etymotics.
Truth be told, my teenage son doesn't really discern much difference between his stock white iPod earbuds and premium IEM's like these Sennheisers. For him, splurging on the IE 8's would seem foolish. But there are some of us who place great importance on what others might perceive as small differences in sound quality. For us audiophiles (or obsessive-compulsives, if you prefer), the Sennheiser IE 8's represent a fabulous purchase.
Expensive? Yes, definitely, But actually, if you consider how often you might use and enjoy these over a period of many years, the cost really might not seem that great.

I own the M6 in clear and it sounds great and stays put during workout. I bought it for working out, but liked the sound better than my other in ear headphones from V Moda and Sennheiser, so I stared wearing it when I listen to movies at night and for on the go. I decided to get the M6P for the mic/remote and am very happy with it, especially for the price. I can't believe this thing is so cheap but sounds so good. MEElectronics has made me a loyal customer with their value!

Klipsch Custom-2 In-Ear Noise-Isolating Earphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had these Klipsch Custom 2 In-Ear-Monitor (IEM) earphones for about a month now. There are a number of things you should know before you buy a pair:
1.The Sound.
They used two Balanced Armature drivers to deliver a flat, balanced sound that really emphasizes the mid-range. Unamplified vocal music comes across warm and present. Treble is a less prominent than the mid-range. Bass is always in the background. Take note: The earphones can reproduce bass, however, it's muted--and after a few minutes of listening you don't notice it very much. It feels like it's missing something and this is due to the design. Balanced Armature drivers don't move the air as much as a moving coil "dynamic" driver, which many other earphones use. That's important because with these earphones we don't "feel" the bass punch the way you might be looking for. It's always in the background and not prominent with the Klipsch custom 2. This will be disappointing if you like music that emphasizes the bass. On the other hand, if you like a full-range earphone and find other earphones to be "too bassy", then these would be good for you.
So, these earphones are good if you like acoustic vocal music where bass is not a primary component.
If you do like bass, you'll find that these earphones are missing something which other earphones provide a bit more (no in-ear-phone will have a fantastic subwoofer-range bass response, especially for ipods, as earphones with an impedance of 16 ohms or over have reduced low-range on ipods).
Klipsch itself seemed to have recognized this as they have gone with a moving coil "dynamic" driver design in their Klipsch Image S4, which won an award from CNET recently.
*Update* I recently listened to the Klipsch Image S4. After a "burn-in" period necessary for dynamic driver-based earphones, it sounds great, with a more bass-prominent sound. The custom 2's are just slightly richer in the mid-range, but honestly, the Custom 2's are better than most earphones in that range. There are music tracks where you can hear elements of bass on the Klipsch Image S4 that you don't notice on the Klipsch Custom 2. The Image S4's are really great earphones and I wish I had bought them instead of the Custom 2's.
2. Comfort
Klipsch noticed that the human ear canal isn't round, it's oval-shaped. So, they've given us oval-shaped ear-gels. Well, an oval is different sideways versus upright, right? This accounts for all the discussion on comfort in other reviews. It takes a little time to orient the eargels in the right way. Once you get the hang of that, these are very comfortable earphones. A good fit is important for the sound quality (crybabies who gave these earphones 1-star clearly didn't take the relatively short time to properly fit the 'phones).
They have an over-the-ear loop. That may not be for everyone, but they're neat because you can pull the earphone out of your ear and let them dangle from the loop when you need to talk to someone or pay attention to your surroundings (IEMs block outside noise when they are in your ear). Not a feature for everyone, but it can be very nice.
3. Value
They used to be $199, now they are $60. There's a reason for the price drop, but if you like jazz or folk or acoustic or classical music, then these are a real steal (5 stars earphones for you). If you like punchy bass that really makes itself present and alive in your music, then you can avoid this discountinued set of earphones and maybe go for the Klipsch Image S4. People coming from an old pair of dynamic driver-based earphones (sony, monster, etc.) should go with the Klipsch Image S4 for sure. If you're coming from balance armature earphones like Etymolic, you'll find the Klipsch custom 2 to be more balanced than, say, the Etymolic Er6i.

Ultimate Ears TripleFi 10vi Noise Isolating Earphones w/ Microphone Review

Ultimate Ears TripleFi 10vi Noise Isolating Earphones w/ Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These Buds come with the full arsenal for a great listening experience. They come with four types of buds, one type a foam kind that fits to your ear perfectly, so they are what I use. And when you put them in, you can't hear anything outside or around you. Airplanes with crying babies are no match; the buds cancel ambient noise by design.
The main selling point for me was the iPhone compatibility, with the mic and play button. Works great, and the only complain from a realllly picky perspective would be that the button be right below the mic, instead of on the main chord, as the mic and button are separate on the chord. But it makes no difference.
Another thing I like is the wire that comes out of the bud end. There is a wire about 2 inches long inside the cord that you can bend so when you put them over your ear they stay in place, which is great when I run and move around. They are large, due to the three drivers in each bud, but are worth it. From low to high frequency, they play music back as accurately as possible.
I record my music in lossless formats on my computer, so playback comes at CD quality. After a couple weeks of listening, this is what I found: Bass is strong. Now I wouldn't use these phones for a DJ or anyone whose only concern is bass, but every low chord or beat comes out as if you were right there playing it yourself. But this is what got me. The best sound quality for these speakers comes in the mid-high to high frequencies. It doesn't matter how high the sound is, be it a trumpet blaring, guitar at high E with cymbal crashes, or a female soprano hitting the highs, the speakers won't crack or fuzz like cheap headphones, and when comparing them to the generic iPhone ones I regretfully was using before, the difference is extremely pleasant and refreshing. This is quite something, since the first thing I listen to is Bass quality, so for the crisp highs to take away my attention from Bass is saying something.
One last thing for the listening experience that is a great joy to listen to is their reproduction of the sound itself. Some speakers make you feel like you're in the studio, others make you feel like you're listening by the studio, and each headphone is different. This is called sound stage, and the UE's reproduce it very well. Unamped, they can put you there
The case is great (practical) and I use it all the time, as well as the extender when I need to. For Audiophiles such as me, pictures and specs are on their website at [...]. They show you how to wrap the cord around your ear like i explained earlier, which is nice.
I have many headphones, including AKG 701's, Sennheiser HD 650's, Sony MDR-F1's, Shure and those V-moda's, among mannnnyyy others. For an earbud, these rank among the top of the list, and I would reccommend them to anyone.

Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro Earphones (White) Review

Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro Earphones (White)

Shure SE425-CL Dual High-Definition MicroDriver Earphone with Detachable Cable (Clear) Review

Shure SE425-CL Dual High-Definition MicroDriver Earphone with Detachable Cable (Clear)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hi Everyone,
I just received my SE425's 2 days ago, and have had ample time to "break them in". After spending almost $300, I'm not sure if they're exactly as I expected. I previously had the Shure E2C, SE210, and SE310; all of them were wonderful in their own ways at their price points.
However, the SE425 have very similar sound to the now-discontinued and discounted SE310 even with two discrete drivers, while costing more (after SE310 price discounts). The cables are too rigid near the ears, making for uncomfortable wearing. Also, the nozzles/earpieces don't go as deep in the ear canal as previous models, but surprisingly without sacrificing sound isolation. The bass is too understated, even compared to Shure's "flat-sound" standards. The detachable cables are an amazing innovation (finally implemented), especially since my previous models have gone through 3-4 cable warranty repairs (crackling sound) while the drivers themselves were perfectly fine.
Beware, the earphone plug-in piece is quite large, making it very difficult to fit in iPhone/MP3 player cases (especially the iPhone 1st gen and iPhone 4 w/ bumper). The previous Shure models didn't have this problem, as their plug points were quite narrow.
Overall, the Shure SE425 seems more durable than previous models, but their high price point with only marginal improvements makes it slightly difficult to justify over previous Shure models, which are now heavily discounted.
I'm do not claim to be an audiophile who listens to music only through Amps and such, though I do value and understand quality audio. I mainly use these headphones with my iPhone 4 and laptop with higher bitrate songs (320 KPBS+ VBR).
Hopefully this helps, and good luck in your earphone search!!

Klipsch Custom-3 In-Ear Noise-Isolating Earphones Review

Klipsch Custom-3 In-Ear Noise-Isolating Earphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
***Note: This review has been updated since originally posted. Please check the "Comments" on this review for further discussion as well!SO, you're shopping for high-end earphones, eh? Let me begin with this: you've found the right products.
This is a review of BOTH the Klipsch Image X-10 earphones and the Klipsch Custom-3 earphones. (Amazon used to group reviews for all Klipsch headphones together for some reason...now they are separated, but here is a review of both earphones anyways.)
I've had a pair of the Klipsch Image earphones for a good year now. (Klipsch has introduced a cheaper version, the Image X-5, and renamed the original Image the Image X-10...so I will refer to mine as the X-10s from here on.) The Image X-10's are a fantastic pair of earphones. They are TINY...really, really small. This makes them extremely portable, light, and comfortable. When I first received the Image X-10's, I simply placed them in my ears and the seal was perfect - on the first try with the standard medium single flange gels! It is EXTREMELY easy to insert and remove these earphones. Instant, perfect seal every time. They are very, very comfortable. I have worn them for hours without my ears hurting or itching...they feel about as natural as can be. The sound quality is great as well, and when you consider their size, it is unbelievable how they designed these earphones. Stock iPod earphones and most every other "upgrade" earphones will pale in comparison to the sound quality and clarity of the Image X-10's. One of the highlights is the soundstage - with the Images, you can visualize & "place" the location of each of the instruments in a song around your head...very distinct. These earphones provide exceptional quality and comfort. Definitely more clarity than the Sennheiser PX100 (open air, on ear supra-aural...very inexpensive, about $30-40 street, yet an incredible warm sound with great bass, the best deal for headphones) and even better detail and reproduction than the AKG K271 Mk II (fairly high-end closed circumaural around ear studio monitor headphones, accurate and crisp detail, about $200 street, my favorite all-around headphones for studio work and mixing). The Images are very adept, with the ability to provide shockingly defined but totally encompassing bass when asked to, much like my Grado SR225s do (and the Grado's have the advantage of an open ear design.) The Images have very good sound isolation with the single flange gels I use, and you can get a little extra isolation with the double flange tips.
I've had the Klipsch Custom-3's for quite a few months now (a few less months than the Image X-10s). When I first put the earphones on, I had some trouble getting the fit/seal right, so I tried moving up to the single flange large ear gel instead of the medium ones that come on the earphones. (On the Image X-10s, I use the medium single flange gel and it works perfectly...kind of weird that I would have to use a large on the Custom-3's to get the seal right when it should be the same as the Images...the gels visually appear identical in both earphones...) After some experimentation, I dropped back down to medium size gels, and just inserted them deeper in my ear canals. This seems to work best, but after about 15-30 minutes, I have to press them back in to maintain the seal (especially if I have been moving around). Losing the seal is quite annoying and is one of the major reasons why I will almost always reach for the Images before the Custom-3's, unless there is some specific situation where I want the flush around-ear design of the Custom-3's. Recently, I have found that using 3rd party foam eartips improves this problem of getting the right fit and maintaining the seal, so I definitely recommend picking some up if you are having trouble with the included silicon tips. (I used the orange ones made by Shure, so I can say with certainty that they will fit properly and work, but I didn't try any other types so I can't give any other specific recommendations here.) The Custom 3's are a bit troublesome and time consuming to put on (even beyond achieving the seal), mostly due to this style of headphones (behind the ear cables -- you have to get the seal right while at the same time properly wrapping the loop around the back of your ear...but it gets easier with practice.) Sound quality on the Custom-3's is unprecedented and exceptional....can't even begin to describe it. Better than the Image X-10's. From what I've heard, it is better than the comparable Shure SE-420s that cost nearly twice as much. I bought the Custom-3's for that extra bit of sound quality, and to use as In Ear Monitors for singing vocals. They are designed perfectly for this use. Great choice for stage musicians and the like. The Images also come with a great compact leather case that securely holds the earphones and stays shut using magnets...very sleek. The Custom-3's do NOT come with this case or anything similar, and believe it or not, this is actually a significant point because the Custom-3's do not have any compact way to safely store them.
The Custom-3's do block out a ton of exterior noise, so in the end, they seem to be built for professionals on stage or hardcore audiophiles who want the best sound quality in a small package. Don't try to talk to people or hear outside noise with these on, let alone with music playing. I wouldn't want to wear these walking around on the street or in public, I'd prefer the Images or some less isolating headphones. Comfort is good, but the Image X-10's are definitely better...since they are so small and light, you don't even know they are in your ear. I almost always prefer the Images when I want to listen to music...only on stage and sometimes while lying in bed do I prefer the Custom-3's. This is because the wire on the Images sticks straight out of the ear, where as the Custom-3's are more flush, so you can sleep on the Custom-3's a bit better (but still, as with nearly all earphones, you will feel some pressure pushing in).
In the end, here's my best advice:
Looking for excellent sound quality, comfort, easy accessibility (on and off), and portability? Go with the Image X-10's. You will NOT be disappointed. What they "lack" in sound quality is more than made up for by their size and comfort. And let me emphasize, these do NOT lack in sound quality...they will blow most every other earphone out of the water.
BUT, if you are looking for the absolute best sound quality, bar none...Maybe you are a professional musician/audiophile/studio mixer/etc...then the Custom-3's might be for you.
I fit both categories, so that's how I ended up with both the Images and the Custom-3's.
In the end, I highly recommend both earphones, even though I feel the Image X-10s are far more versatile and a better option for 95% of people. But, you really need to know your intentions and decide between the two based upon what you plan to use them for. Both are excellent headphones, Klipsch really hit the mark right on. You won't be disappointed with either choice. The tradeoff between the best sound quality and best comfort will be apparent in any other competing earphone, as the laws of physics do limit the size of miniature components. In my opinion, Klipsch has really done an excellent job -- and the Image X-10's and the Custom-3's provide two distinct options for the high-end earphone buyer.

Westone UM1 Bundle with Triple Flange, Monitor Saver, more Review

Westone UM1 Bundle with Triple Flange, Monitor Saver, more
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Westone UM1 Review"
I was in the market for a set of earphones to replace my Vmoda Bass Freq earphones which I gave to my daughter. Prior to the Vmoda, I owned a set of Sony MDR EX71 SLB earphones, which stopped working in the left ear due to a short in the wire. I really liked the portability of earphones over headphones, but hated the way the wires kept getting tangled up in the Sony and Vmoda earphones.
I would not consider myself an audiophile, but I do like to listen to music and audiobooks. My criteria for my next set of earphones was as follows: noise isolation, price, comfort, sound quality, and customer service/product support (in that order).
In my search for finding a good set of sound isolating ear phones, I considered looking into headphones. My friend got a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort II noise cancelling headphones over Christmas and he couldn't stop talking about them. But I ruled them out for the sake of portability.
One of the best sites I found for providing information and user reviews was the Earphone Solutions website. I read every user review for every earphone that fit my criteria and I concluded on paper that the Westone UM1 earphones were the best ones for me.
But before I shelled out the cash, I wanted to hear the difference myself. The opportunity came when I was at the airport awaiting my connection flight. I went into a high-end headphone store and asked the salesperson if I could listen to some of the earphones he had on hand. I listed to the Shure SE115 and SE210 models along with the Dr. Dre Monster Beats eaphones and Westone UM1s.
SE115: The first earphone I tried was the Shure SE115. It was small and did not protrude excessively from the ear. I was impressed by Shure's heavy and high quality cords. The carrying case and accessories provided were really nice too. However, when I listened to the music from my iPod, I had to bring the volume level to approximately half to listen to the music and drown out the background noise. The bass and trebles were lacking and the mids were relatively flat. Pros: small, nice cord, nice accessory packet, many colors to choose from, price ($79), you could wear them hanging straight down or around the ear. Cons: sound isolation not as good as normal ear plugs (I used the foam inserts provided), sound was flat and lacked bass and treble.
SE210: Next, I moved to the Shure SE210s. These were more expensive ($180) and although they touted a fuller sound than the SE115s, they were not significantly better. The pros and cons were nearly identical to the SE115s except that the price was significantly more expensive and they stuck out a little further than the SE115s.
Monster Beats: This version was called the Dr. Dre Tour in-ear headphones. The most unique aspect of these headphones was the cord: they were flat and easily avoided entanglement through the great design. They also touted a strong bass sound. Unfortunately for my ears, that was about it. The worst part of these earphones was the rubber ear cups that were supplied. They did not do a good job at isolating sound as well as the foam inserts (which were available but for an additional $20). Pros: flat cord, strong bass, bling factor. Cons: expensive, sound quality was worse than the Shures except for the decent bass response. Treble was lacking and the mids were muffled.
Westone UM1: The fit of the UM1s took a little getting used to because I have never had a set of earphones that required wrapping around the ear and behind the head. I looked on Shure's website (they have a nice video that shows how to wear sound-isolating earphones properly) and learned how to properly don my earphones. These blew me away! The sound isolation was remarkable. My volume level dropped down to approximately 10% on my iPod compared to nearly 50% with the Dr. Dre and Shure earphones. The sound was fantastic and although they were not overly bass heavy, they had better bass response than the Shures. I thought that the cord was really flimsy at first, but then I got used to them and realized that there was a true benefit to having the twisted pair of wires, which actually made them tangle resistant (though not as good as the Dr. Dres). The best thing I liked about the UM1s was the fact that I could wear them while lying on my pillow--I fell asleep with them a few times and hardly noticed that they were there at all. Pros: great sound isolation, great product support (2 year warranty), comfortable to wear for long periods, outstanding sound. Cons: a little pricey at $109 (for my budget), not very distinctive looking, style of wear takes some getting used to, did not have the triple flanges supplied (which would have added even more isolation).
Summary: Overall, I was really impressed with the Westone UM1s. Prior to getting info from the internet, I had never even heard of Westone before. Now I am a big fan. I took my UM1s with me on a 3-hour flight and enjoyed peace and serenity throughout the flight. The slight pressure in wearing ear canal headphones takes some getting used to, but once you get accustomed to that, they are a great pair of headphones!
I've attached a summary of my review and rankings of the various headphones I was considering from 1-5 (5 highest).
Here is ranking for the Westone UM1: 4.45 out of 5.
They are simply the best value for my limited budget!
Pros:
-Great sound isolation
-Great product support (2 year warranty)
-Comfortable to wear for long periods
-Outstanding sound quality
Cons:
-A little pricey at $109 (for my budget)
-Not very distinctive looking (clear)
-Style of wear takes some getting used to
-Did not have the triple flanges supplied (which would have added even more isolation)

Sennheiser IE6 Dynamic In-Ear Headphone Review

Sennheiser IE6 Dynamic In-Ear Headphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
BLUF: Best headphone for the money, hands down!!!
I'm no audiophile, but I can tell the difference between a good and bad headphone in terms of bass, mid, and treble performance. This is by far the most balanced pair of headphone in all three categories that are in this price range.
I've been a die-hard Shure fan for years since I bought the Shure E2C (yes, they are the cheapest Shure headphones out there but still good). I also have a pair of Shure SE210 as an upgrade, but actually disappoints. This review will contain comparisons between these headphones.
COMFORT:
Even the best sounding headphones aren't good if they aren't comfortable. The IE6's silicone tips feels very comfortable just like the SE210's foam tips. They are much more comfortable than the E2Cs. I can wear the IE6 all day long and not feel uncomfortable which cannot be said for both (yes, both) the Shures.
CONSTRUCTION:
The IE6 is truly a high quality product in this regard. Plus the Kevlar coating will surely help the durability. I can't say for sure since I only have been using them for a few days, but they certainly feel more sturdy than the SE210s, which the left headphone broke off from the cable after a year's use.
SOUND QUALITY:
The IE6 blows both the Shures out of the water. The sound is very rich with crisp highs and thumping lows that does not overpower. The IE6 sounds much more detailed and more plesant than both the Shures but provide more bass. This was exactly what I was looking for in a new headphone and the IE6 delivers.
I usually listen to a wide variety of songs when I test headphones but I always like to listen to Dave Matthews Band's "Crush" and "Crash Into Me" to listen to how much details the headphones deliver. Shures sound like as if the bass was severely toned down while delivering very clear, crisp sound. The IE6, however, sounds almost like if the band was preforming right in front of me. Not only are the details crisp and clear, but the bass is pleasantly strong. They sound very rich and warm and overall, much better than Shures.
SOUND ISOLATION:
This is one aspect that the Sennheiser loses to Shure, but not by much. Shure's ear-tips are truly like earplugs that fills your ear canal in order to block out all outside noise. The silicone tips from the IE6 are not as effective, but once the music is playing, the difference is minimal under most conditions.
ACCESSORIES:
The IE6 comes with a beautiful brushed aluminum/matte black plastic case. It also comes with a cable clip, ear loop and 6 sets of ear tips. The Shures only come with a decent hard fabric case and an array of ear tips. Both also come with a cleaning tool.
OVERALL:
The Shures are great, but the Sennheiser IE6 is even better. The more I use them, the more I can hear the difference between the two and it is really, really mind-blowingly good. If you think the Shures are great but want more bass, try the IE6. They deliver more bass and more detail than Shures. It's really worth the premium to get these.

Thinksound Rain 9mm High Definition Passive Noise Isolating Wooden Headphone (Silver/Cherry) Review

Thinksound Rain 9mm High Definition Passive Noise Isolating Wooden Headphone (Silver/Cherry)

I've been searching for a set of ear buds to replace those awful OEM ipod buds. The 9mm Rain buds intrigued me as I needed something smaller than the ipod buds and I listen to a lot of music with horns and high ends. I've owned them for better than 2 weeks now and riding the tube to work has never been more enjoyable. I recommend these buds to people that have had comfort issues with the ipod buds and are looking for excellent performance and value. Very impressed with this product.

Soundmagic PL30 In-Ear Headphones Review

Soundmagic PL30 In-Ear Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First i'd like to say that I am somewhat of a budget audiophile. I have about a dozen headphones, none of which are priced over $60. Until i got these my recommended budget buy was the Koss KSC75 clip-ons. However, that's all changed. I'd also like to note that I am testing these on various Sandisk players and a laptop through a Fiio E5 headphone amp.
Pros: -Very balanced sound after a few hours of burn in
-Bass is plenty punchy on "clear bass" setting
-Very lightweight and comfortable; smaller than they look in photos
-Pretty solid construction, seems like the phones will hold up to some abuse (can't vouch for the bass switch though)
-Great variety of accessories included. Mine came with about 10 pairs of tips (including bi-flange and foamies), cable wrap, carrying case, over-the-ear cable guides, and a cord clip.
-The cable is rubbery and tangles far less than many others

Cons: -There is some cord contact noise, though not as much as my other iem's
-They are difficult to use while excercising without the (provided) cable guides
-None of the provided tips offer ideal noise isolation. Aftermarket foamies work best
Other Thoughts: -They don't have the high-end sparkle of certain higher-end headphones (e.g. Yuin pk3/ok3) (whether this is good or bad depends on you listening preferences)
Bottom Line: for people who are looking for budget IEM's, there is no better choice at anywhere near this price. I myself will be buying several more sets as gifts.

MEElectronics M9P-BK Hi-Fi Sound-Isolating In-Ear Headphones with Microphone (Black) Review

MEElectronics M9P-BK Hi-Fi Sound-Isolating In-Ear Headphones with Microphone (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Introduction
The M9P IEMs hail from a small California-based company by the name of MEElectronics. They produce a wide range of IEMs that cater to different users with various sound signatures. The M9 and M9P IEMs are among the most inexpensive products available and are currently selling for $20 and $23 respectively. I decided to buy the M9P IEMs because they not only function as earphones but will also have use as a headset for my cell phone and iPod Touch. After breaking them in and listening to them with a variety of music in my collection, these are my favorite IEMs in the sub $30 price range and are fantastic earphones for the price.
Technical Specifications
Driver: 9mm dynamic driver
Frequency Response: 20Hz - 20KHz
Impedance: 16 Ohm
Sensitivity: 95dB/mW
Cable Length: 1.2m/4ft.
Packaging/Accessories: The M9Ps come packaged in an attractive transparent box and include a bevy of accessories including a hard zippered case, a cable wrapper, four sets of silicone eartips which includes a set of biflanges, a shirt clip and an airline adapter. Considering that the M9Ps only cost about $23, MEElectronics has included a highly impressive accessory package that puts many other inexpensive IEMs to shame.
Design and Build Quality: The M9Ps feature lightweight aluminum housings which feel durable and are ported at the rear to allow for more air flow. This helps with the low end response and the soundstage but cuts down the isolation.
The cable is perhaps the best I've seen on any IEM. It's lined with what appears to be delicate braided silver wiring inside and coated with a transparent plastic coating that both looks very attractive and makes it feel very durable. The cable is properly relieved at both ends which inspires confidence in terms of long term durability. Because of the great cable design, microphonics are negligible when worn straight down and practically non-existent when worn over-the-ear.
All in all, these are very attractive and durable IEMs that should be able to stand up to pretty heavy usage and last quite a long time.
Comfort and Fit: MEElectronics includes three pairs of single flange silicone eartips as well as a pair of bi-flanges for deeper insertion and better isolation. I have small ear canals so I opted for the smallest single flange tips and managed to get a good seal. The included silicone eartips are fairly soft and made the M9Ps very comfortable to use for long periods of time.
One thing that was a constant point of contention with the M9Ps is the seal itself. Now it's common knowledge that IEMs require a good seal in order to sound their best but the M9Ps take that concept to another level. Simply put, I've never come across an IEM that was as finicky about the seal as the M9. If the seal wasn't absolutely perfect, the resultant sound was imbalanced, shallow or just plain bad. That said, using the M9Ps while on the move isn't the best idea because of its need for a perfect seal.
Sound Quality
Usage/Burn-in: These IEMs have been given 50+ hours of burn-in prior to review but settled into their final sound signature after about 10 - 15 hours.
Low End: The most dominant frequency range on the M9Ps is also the best detailed. Prior to burn in, the bass was somewhat muddy but now, it has tightened up and boasts surprising refinement. Bass is still a bit boomy but not too much so. Extension is pretty good as well, reaching down into the sub bass levels before rolling off.
Midrange: Definitely recessed in comparison to the other two frequencies (especially the bass) but not so much so that it is overly detrimental to the overall sound signature. They're smooth and don't stand out too prominently, which may disappoint fans of Rock and Alternative music. The low end can creep up on bassier tracks which does make the midrange sound a bit washed out in comparison but overall, I think they are decently detailed.
Highs/Treble: Nice extension, detail and clarity. There's a bit of harshness in the upper treble region but overall, highs are pleasant sounding and have a nice sparkle.
Soundstage: Wide and airy. Imaging isn't too great but instrument separation is surprisingly good.
Sound Signature: Dark, warm, thumpy and very fun. Very bass forward and somewhat aggressive but rarely fatiguing. I love the sound signature of these when listening to Hip-Hop, Jazz and R&B. I think the low end is a bit too overpowering to be used with much Rock and Alternative music and the highs are a bit too harsh to be used with Classical but overall, these are very versatile and will work with a large number of genres that I haven't mentioned. This is definitely the best and most entertaining sound signature I've heard for the price.
Microphone Quality: Very good considering the price. Voices come through clean and clear and the microphone does a decent job of filtering out ambient noise but can get overwhelmed in noisy environments. It works well for making phone calls as well as Skype calls on the iPod Touch.
Conclusion
As a whole, I'm very impressed with the M9P IEMs. They are well designed, perform above their price range and are, above all, inexpensive. $23 is a very small price to pay for a great pair of IEMs and considering that price, I can't find much fault with them. While the bass may be a bit too deep for some listeners and there can be some harshness in the treble region, there isn't much these do wrong. If you're looking for a fun pair of IEMs that will work as a headset for your iPhone or other cell phone, sound good and won't put a strain on your wallet, look no further. These things are practically a steal.
