Sennheiser PXC 450 NoiseGard Active Noise-Canceling Headphones Review

Sennheiser PXC 450 NoiseGard Active Noise-Canceling Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I compared these headphones side-by-side with five other noise cancelling headphones: Bose QC2 & 3, JVC NC250, Audio Technica ANC7, and Sennheiser PXC-250. I was in the market for a noise cancelling headphone because I travel a lot and I wanted to be able to watch movies or listen to music in relative isolation. With the ipod earbuds, you have to blast your ears in order to compete with the airplane's engines and I want to preserve my hearing. My main criteria were sound qualifty, noise cancelling, and comfort. All three were very important and I didn't really want to compromise on any of those categories. The only headphone that excelled at all three was the PXC-450. I disqualified all but the PXC-450 on the basis of out of the box testing.
The JVC was disqualified right away on the basis of its cheap build quality. It does not fit snugly on your head, it is very loose. The slightest movement of my head and the earphones would slide around on my ears. Because of that these headphones offered zero passive noise cancelling. Sound quality was okay but nothing special. These headphones never really merited serious consideration.
The Audio Techicas are one of the most popular headphones on Amazon. I read the reviews of this headphone extensively, and most people rave about these headphones. The only criticism of them I saw was sound leakage. People complained that when you listen to these headphones, people around you can hear what you're listening to. They were right. It really is a shame because other than that flaw, these are very good headphones. The sound and noise cancelling is amazing considering the price. However, as I was buying this for use in very close quarters (airplane travel), I didn't want to have to worry about bothering people around me.
The PXC-250 sounded amazing. I couldn't believe such small headphones could sound so good. However, the battery wand I felt got in the way a bit and I just didn't think the noise cancelling on these on ear headphones was as good as the other more expensive headphones. The 250s had another odd problem in that very slight movements would cause the earpads to rub slightly on your ear. This rubbing created a noise that would reverberate inside your ear that was very noticable if you were watching a movie or listening to softer music.
When I was testing the Bose and the PXC-450, comparing them to the other headphones I tested, it made me realize that noise cancelling technology must just be expensive which is why if you want a quality noise cancelling headphone, you have to be willing to shell out some cash. The Audio Technicas are by far the best of the cheaper NC headphones, but the Bose (particularly the QC3) and the 450 really stand out from the pack.
The Bose are very good headphones, but they have some issues that I just couldn't get over. First, I don't like the way Bose headphones sound. They push the bass into your face and the mids and highs sound muddy. Most of the reviews of these headphones mention these issues. The QC2 got very warm and I could feel the heat radiating inside on my ears and it was not comfortable.
The QC3s are really amazing. They are on ear headphones, yet they had the best noise cancelling of any of the other headphones I tried. The earpads are made of a material that just kill sound. Without even turning the earphones on, you are immediately immersed in silence. However, in addition to the sound quality issue, there is something about their noise cancelling function that creates a pressure on your eardrum. This pressure bothered me enough that it was hard to ignore. If the PXC-450 did not exist, I would have gone with the QC3 and just sucked it up, but I was glad that I didn't have to.
Finally, the PXC-450. For me, these were the perfect headphone and I just fell in love with them and didn't have to think very hard about which ones to keep.
Bass. I read a lot of reviews and a lot of people complained about a lack of bass on these headphones. When I first put these headphones on, I admit that I was a little let down because it seemed to me like they were very weak. Then I realized that I needed to adjust the volume control on the headphones. I basically turned the volume on the headphones all the way up and just adjust the volume on my ipod. With the volume issue fixed, my concerns about the bass went away. These headphones do not have as much bass as Bose. However, that's because Bose changes the sound from the way it was intended to push the bass forward. If you like a lot of bass, these headphones might not be for you. However, the bass is definitely there. Just listen to Pon de Replay (Rihanna) or Pass that Dutch (Missy Elliot) for a demonstration of how good the bass is on these headphones.
Sound Quality. Moving past the bass to sound quality as a whole, these headphones are in a different league. I mean, I am hearing details in songs I have heard dozens or even hundreds of times and never noticed. Background singers that before were lost with all of the other sounds can be heard clearly on these headphones.
Noise Cancelling. These headphones have a tight fit, which gives them a lot of passive noise cancelling. They are not so tight, however, to become uncomfortable. Combined with the active noise cancelling, and these headphones are *almost* as good as the QC3s. I feel like the QC3s were a little better at cancelling the higher frequencies, but I think that is why they have the pressure on the eardrum problem. I didn't feel any pressure with the 450. The slight advantage the QC3s have on noice cancelling is more than outweighed by the 450s superiority in sound quality and comfort.
Comfort. Despite being snug, the 450s are very comfortable. The material that the earpads are made of is very soft and I quickly forgot I was wearing them on my flight. The headphones are very big--much larger than the on ear QC3s. However, because they are snug they don't slide around and they really do melt into your head after a while. Also, they don't get hot like the QC2s did.
Portability. Because they are bigger, they are slightly more difficult to manage than the Bose. However, they fold up quite nicely and their case, though larger than both of the Bose cases, is still rather small (and light!).
In the end, once I tried the 450s, there was really no way I could settle for any of the other headphones I tried. All of the other headphones had too many flaws and the 450s were near perfect. Oh, I should mention that I listened for the "ticking sound" that other reviewers complained about in the right earpiece and there was absolutely nothing. Either those reviewers had defective units or Sennheiser has fixed the problem.
Update 3/31/11:
I can't believe it's been three years since I bought these headphones. They still work great and I have no plans to replace them. I only use them when I travel, so they're not getting wear and tear every day, but I was travelling A LOT when I first got these. I have not tried the Bose QC15s, so I can't compare the 450 to those.
Someone in the comments suggested that I work for Sennheiser -- I do not.
I didn't mention the Talkthrough feature in my review. After a lot of use, I have found this feature to be very handy. It's nice when the flight attendant comes by to be able to just press the button and talk to them without having to take the headphones off.

Sony MDRNC7/BLK Noise Canceling on-ear headphones (Black) Review

Sony MDRNC7/BLK Noise Canceling on-ear headphones (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Based on the price, I took the plunge. The construction is pretty solid and look good on the head. The pads are very comfortable with a soft "vinyl" type material. The "arms" of the headphones wrap around the head really well because of the hinge at the top of the headphones.
But to the most important feature: the noise cancelling function was not dramatic during flights - it worked well for a semi-quiet office environment, but my primary need for this is flying. And during flying I noticed only a slight change. Good for the price, but not if you are looking to use this while flying or similar environments investigate other options.

Direct Sound EX29 Extreme Isolation Headphones (Black) Review

Direct Sound EX29 Extreme Isolation Headphones (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These headphones have worked pretty well for me at my office. I'm in a big group of cubicles with completely exposed air conditioners overhead and industrial lab equipment not too far away. These really let me turn DOWN the volume and still hear my music. Sound quality is certainly acceptable, but compared to nice headphones (even in the same price range) it is somewhat lackluster. Think lo-fi. The point is that these headphones have way, way better sound quality *in a noisy environment* than the alternatives. If you don't need the isolation, look at the Sennheiser model below or the Sony MDR-7506. Or AKG K240. Or something more expensive. :)
Before deciding on these, I tried a few other worthy contenders:
** Bose Quiet Comfort 2. For the kinds of noise in my office, these did not do as good a job at isolation as the Extreme Isolation did. They are amazing at getting rid of low frequency noise, however. I can see why people like them for air travel. I found these to be LESS comfortable than the Extreme Isolation after use for a few weeks. (It feels like there is a pressure difference when the isolation is turned on.) Sound quality in the Bose headphones was OK but not stellar by any means. I didn't like that the active isolation circuit (which creates an annoying hiss) has to be engaged all the time (or the headphones don't work), and I didn't like the price, which is about 3X higher than the Extreme Isolation 'phones.
** Sennheiser HD-280. The Senn's have noticably better sound (much more definition and clarity, if somewhat lacking in bass), and do have impressive isolation. But it isn't anywhere close to what the Extreme Isolation provides. These would probably work fine in a less noisy office. And they don't look as dorky, either. :)
I have had 2 coworkers try out my headphones and decide to get their own set.
One important point--when you first get the headphones, they are VERY tight. One friend initially called them the "head pinchers". This effect makes for a very uncomfortable experience, but the good news is that they loosen up over time. Now, besides the obvious bulk, I don't notice any discomfort at all. One friend successfully pre-stretched his when he got them to counteract this effect.

Direct Sound EX29 Extreme Isolation Headphones were invented by a prominent studio session drummer. After many long and frustrating recording sessions as a drummer in Studio City, CA, he knew there had to be a better way. Drummers, studio engineers, stage and studio musicians, and anyone who wants serious sound isolation, owe it to themselves (and their ears!) to check out this product. Quality What makes them extreme? They use specially designed earmuffs that passively attenuate surrounding sound by 28 decibels and custom fitted high quality speaker assembly. (See Specifications below) Because of the extreme surrounding sound isolation, it is only necessary to use the headphones at medium to low volume. This in turn, protects your precious eardrums from damage. As a drummer, the designer was able to hear my practice music better or hear a studio mix better and still hear the drums and feel the natural strike against the drum heads. He could mix my own drums next to the multi-track in the same room! Comfort Extreme Isolation Headphones ear cushion design, the shape of their headphone enclosure and headband design are the key factors involved for the proper amount of isolation and play a huge role in why wthey have serious isolation and comfort. They have the most light weight, comfortable, and affordable ear muffs ever designed, that can be worn for long periods without fatigue. Extreme Isolation Headphones do not use a single heavy coiled cord, because it tends to interfere with your ease of movement and could cause discomfort and fatigue; it would be similar to having a leash tied to one side of your head while you are performing. The right ear felt is bright red to easily identify the right speaker in dim light. The headphones are very durable and sturdy. For convenience, a 1/4 inch gold jack adapter is also included. Zune Premium Headphones v2 Review

Average Reviews:

There are others that have spot on reviews here, but I wanted my voice and review to be heard and added. I intend to keep my review short and simple, since we are after all talking about headphones.
First off, these are great sounding headphones. To echo what someone else said they don't have the overbloated bass found often in other headphones. Although, on the flip side, I would almost like a little more bass. But overall, less is more in this case. What does remain though is a nice, clean, and liquidy sound. Liquidy is a hard thing to find in a pair of headphones in this price range I feel.
So whats it's one problem? While I absolutely LOVE the look and design of these headphones (including the bungie cord texture and the magnetic earbud connection) it is the one thing that causes it's flaw. And that flaw is that because of it's rough texture, if it rubs up against something you hear it transfer to the earbuds, and thus interferes with the sound. While it is noticable to tell that sound from the music, it does distract after a while.
For instance, I used it while shoveling snow (that time of year)...I could hear everytime I moved. I imagine running or exercising in any way would be the same case. Now sitting still. No problem. Overall this one element brought the overall score down one star. Still an awesome and eyecatching set of earbud headphones, but not perfect.

JVC HANC80 Folding Noise Cancelling Headphone Review

JVC HANC80 Folding Noise Cancelling Headphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My experience with noise reducing earphones is with the JVC HANC100, which is an earlier, and fairly satisfactory headphone. I've been satisfied with it for about a year.
This, the JVC HANC80 noise cancelling headphone, is even better! The sound rendition is superb. And this model has two modes of noise reduction: low frequency, and a wider range for more typical noisy environments, e.g. office, library, shopping, home (when relatives visit), auto travel, bus, aircraft, well, you get the picture ...
I like the wide range. At home with airconditioner, fans, neigborhood sounds, jets above, radios blaring, dogs barking etc, the effect is comforting. Add some music from your iPod or radio earphone outlet and you find yourself in a (quiet) heaven, listening to a high quality of sound reproduction. I was impressed with the sound quality, and I've used earphones of various types for many years.
One must understand that these, or any, noise-reduction earphones are exactly that: they are NOT noise-CANCELLING! Silicone earplugs are the best you can do in that regard. Best noise reduction is in the very low frequencies (makes my Boston MBTA subway excursions bearable). The excellent sound quality is icing on the cake. Get real! This isn't Star Trek, merely the 21st century. You don't need to spend $350 for that high priced brand! This is an excellent product.
Recommended.
Also look at the JVC HARX300 non-noisecancelling phones. They go over the ears, are very reasonably prices, have fantastic sound. Not designed to be easily transported (don't fold). I love them - have three, in each place in my home where I like to listen to music or TV.

With the new JVC HANC80 noise canceling headphone, now you can choose the most effective noise cancel mode for the circumstances. HANC80 offers both "wide" and "low" noise cancellation modes. The "wide" mode targets a wider frequency range than the "low" mode, and cancels the type of noise typically found in a commercial jet cabin. The "low" mode cancels a slightly narrower and lower frequency range, one associated with the noise generated by trains and buses. The HANC80 deliver up to 75% noise reduction, and also comes with fully padded closed earpieces which help to block ambient noise, and the padded soft touch headband ensure that they'll remain comfortable throughout a long listening. Great headphones for anyone who likes to enjoy high sound quality and doesn't need to conceal their headphones in their ears.
The exterior of the headphones is very well crafted and simply look very stylish. Easy to adjust and the ear pieces swivel with ease.
The most important part is the sound quality. These headphones must be experienced. At top volume there is no sound disruption and the bass from these headphones feels fantastic.
For the price, it's definitely worth checking these out. There are 4 other styles to choose from and these comfortable, stylish, and amazing sounding headphones are worth it.

Koss QZ-99 Noise Reduction Stereophone Review

Koss QZ-99 Noise Reduction Stereophone

These headphones are basically a pair of noise blocking earmuffs with speakers inside.
These are NOT light, NOT small and not the most comfortable.
BUT they are the absolute best noise blocking headphones I have ever used. They are Noise blockers first, headphones second.
I use mine to listen to music while I mow my lawn, I also wear them during target practice. I would not use them for travelling or in the office but thats ok.
Every one who mows their own lawn, works in a machine shop, or works around very loud areas should own a pair of these. Protect your hearing and listen to music at the same time.

ABLE PLANET NC200B True Fidelity Foldable Active Noise Canceling Headphones (Black) Review

ABLE PLANET NC200B True Fidelity Foldable Active Noise Canceling Headphones (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm an international traveler addicted to noise-canceling headphones. My most frequent travel these days is Houston-Los Angeles-somewhere in Australia. That's a lot of hours with the roar of jet engines. Recently I left my phones at home and couldn't bear the thought of not having them on the 14-hour ride to Sydney, so I visited the airport shop. (I know, not recommended.) I found these Able Planet NC200B phones for the MSRP of $99.99, which is as much as I was willing to pay. They definitely did not make me forget my Sony MDR-NC60's. Here are my pros and cons:
Pros:
1. When the battery was on, they canceled noise...a lot of it. At the end of the day, that was what I wanted and they did a reasonable job of it. On this trip I sat on the 71st of 74 rows. The roar back there is incredible and these phones really made a difference.
2. With the battery on, the sound quality is acceptable. Not great, but decent enough. It won't make an audiophile happy at all, but at 37,000 ft, it is ok. I didn't notice the hiss that some others have reported. The bass is good enough. At home without the noise, the clarity is not great, but on the plane you don't notice it so much.
2. These things are pretty solidly built. They feel and look like they will hold up for a lot of use.
3. The cord is detachable. This is nice on the plane because I can get up, keep them on my head but leave the cord behind.
4. The cord includes a volume control. This was a very nice surprise. (Wish my Sony's had it.)
5. Accessories include carrying bag, double-pronged "airplane" jack and 1/4" "home" jack. I wasn't going to buy something that didn't include a way to keep all the bits together, and this does.
Cons:
1. Like some other NC phones (but not all), you have to turn the battery on to get reasonable sound. I tried them in the gate lounge before the flight without battery. Urk! It was terrible. The worst, least expensive phones you can find would sound better. Don't plan to use these without battery.
2. The carrying bag is a thin, fabric bag. Yes, it keeps the bits together, but provides very little protection. My phones are carried in my backpack along with a lot of other stuff. If something were to get on it hard, the bag would not help.
3. I don't prefer the way these fold up for storage. The headband folds in the middle and the phones rotate to face each other. So instead of lying flat in a case, they make into a block with the headband protruding out a bit. This wouldn't be so bad if you were storing them on your shelf, but it doesn't work very well in the seat-back pocket on the plane. It is too thick and unwieldy.
As mentioned, these phones don't make me forget my Sony MDR-NC60's. They may not even be the state of the art these days for the money, but I will stick with mine and let the NC200B's be my backup.

Hey Matas Empakeris! Remember, these headphones are intended for use in noisy environments, such as trains, planes and automobiles. Just bought this 1 week ago and it *does reduce* surround noise. Of course, if you try them out at home in a silent environment, you hear some noise. But even then you still have the option of turning the noise cancelling off and use them as ordinary headphones.
As for the fit, you may have a point, I have experienced more comfortable headphones than this one. But then again I have no problem to keep them on during a train ride of 40 minutes easily. I use them with or without music on (just for the noise canceling). And, for 17,00, this is really a bargain. At least I'm happy with it. Fits perfectly with my smartphone.
